I'm about as non-hipster as you can get as an old redneck. I still use my reel to reel, most peole who have never listened to one recorded at 15ips would be surpised at the quality. Plus you can buy tapes off ebay/goodwil for next to nothing and find some great recordings live and off the radio.

I've always loved audio gear. Had a few brief times where I've been in recording studios, it really gets no better than using this stuff.

A computer can simulate it quite well these days, but it's only a simulation, much better to have the actual liverealaudio feeding in through the channels.

I've not been near stuff this good:
