When did that kind of thing become popular? I feel it was after the internet advent so it is probably some stupid meme bullshit or other ("challenges" et al, and people who need help just finding other people who need help in large groups online)

I definitely remember the daddy issues girls of yesteryear being more just... slutty? And not needing all the weird self mutilation stuff to accent it all. I guess everything really does need to go to 11 these days.
