it is like the stupid new way ICE in cars try to save gas by stopping the engine at a stop light, stupid car manufacturers say it'll save 1ounce of gas of year so that allows the EPA to give it more kudos! but that actually destroys the engine and introduces immense engine wear cuz the worst part of a ICE is when you start it up

While that's one 70s ass cover for a book released in the 80s, it's also my favorite Bear novel, and it's a bummer to hear he died recently.
Pournelle also died in the last couple years; I suppose the clock is ticking on Niven and Benford as well.
