As postulated somewhere else but it makes the most sense to me:
-Subs losing contact happens when they get tangled up on something and bad things happen to the cable, or if they're crushed instantly under tons of pressure.
-sub has multiple methods of floating to the surface even if no-one's in control... as long as it's intact.
-Sub *suddenly* lost contact 2/3 of the way down. There is nothing to hit/tangle on 2/3 of the way down.
-porthole was rated for like 1500 units of I-don't-remember, they were planning to go down to like 2300 units.

Aka, pretty strong case for all of these people to have died nearly instantly and been dead for days now. unless of course it was the Abyss monster....
