A "Sculpture" for roughly the same price went up in a small city an hour south of me. Used to be a textile city until those companies moved away and its spent the last two decades limping by. Now it has a Casino and are trying to beautify the area the casino is in. I read in the paper that the Police force was underfunded last year, among other things.. and a "sculpture" for over a million dollars was an appropriate use of funds?
My city is building an entire amphitheater/park - something that will return money to the city per show, and will bring in sales to local businesses, and by extension, tax money - to lower and/or stabilize my tax burden. But "Art" shouldnt qualify for any expenditure. If the local populace wants to put up a statue of the first <Insert race that isnt white here, cause we know those dont go up anymore> mayor - then it needs to be from local donations. Not even a fraction of a penny should be spent from my tax dollars for that bullshit. Its already bad enough that a lot of perfectly able bodied people are supported by local social services, which draws in more people that vote for the people that support those services, and by extension, raise my taxes more to fund the police force which has to regulate and cage those people.
Seriously, have you guys seen how fucking peaceful grocery stores have been in the last couple weeks? Even if you didnt know what was going on - you would still feel like something is off with how quiet those places are. I know some people, regardless of race, that need that shit. But I have tenants that get food stamps and section 8 services that are driving nice ass cars. This shit has to end.
