Alex should get on a team for some kind of "Dark Souls alternative but with actual decent multiplayer".

His persona would fit in quite well and draw sales. Also Souls-like is begging to be disrupted with games that have actual decent multi-player options. (for example Remant).

You're way overestimating his fame if you think his name will "draw sales"

I agree, but stranger things have happened. Brad McQuaid's name is probably the reason Pantheon has gotten (or got) so much attention from MMO sites.

Alex, billed as "the head content designer for WoW" as much as they could get away with, could be a decent sized coup for a new game to use as a selling point.

That would only work for a low budget indie title that only cares about just being heard of and doesn't care if they are a one-hit wonder (ie, even bad publicity is publicity). The whole Blizzard thing is too fresh in people's minds, he would be toxic waste to most marketing right now to slap his name on something.

Also, he was never a game developer "rockstar" in the sense Richard Garriot or John Carmack (or even Brad) was. When people think WoW (or Diablo or Starcraft), they usually aren't thinking individual devs. They are usually thinking "Blizzard". I think maybe the closest you got with a rockstar dev at Bliz in terms of greater awareness was maybe Jeff Kaplan with Overwatch, which was fueled in large part by memes and his OW update format.

"Rockstar" is also subjective in a sense - let's go with Brad for a moment. He had major name recognition with the Everquest 1 population and early MMO players. So his name might carry some weight with MMO projects...and that is about it. Your name also will only carry weight if you strike gold again. Brad had a series of failures and luke warm follow-ups to EQ1, which eroded any impact his name had on the prestige of a title.

PCGamer has memoryholed Furor by leaving him out of their "most infamous MMO players of all time" list...

Also criminally absent is Fansy.

Kind of surprised there was no mention of Leeroy Jenkins.

Not really. Nobody from EQ or UO should be on that list when at their peak they had just a tiny fraction of players that WoW and FF14 had.

it's like the most infamous member of your group of your high school vs an entire country.

Fansy should still be there though, that guy was awesome

They were infamous proportional to the entire playerbase of MMOs at the time. The popular kid at your school wasn't popular among all schools in the world.

If they're the popular kid at your school and there are only two or three schools in the world, it matters a lot more. Being one of the first or influential for your era is an important part of the historical record.

..................................... That's one hell of a selling point? I guess you're assuming people will fall for it.

Only if they are remembered outside of obscure trivia. Good example here:

This woman was basically the Martha Stuart/Rachel Ray/etc of her day, and it could be argued the first person to do that type of model of cooking entertainment + selling people branded cooking things to go along with that. She was very famous during that era, primarily in the UK. After she died, though, she was virtually forgotten and her cooking empire rapidly faded away.
