You already know more about the German military than I do, so I'll defer to you. I was just going off of the fact that my admittedly faulty memory makes me want to remember that he looked like a teenager about to shit his own pants.

I'm not intimately familiar with the staffing policies of the SS but I'm guessing they weren't drafted into the SS, they had to be selected/volunteer. Wehrmacht, yes.
Early on it was incredibly hard to get into the SS. One had to show that his family had been living in German/Austria for several generations and that he was of a pure blood lineage. It was a prestigious position, early on in the war.

Of course, as the war went on they started adding foreign units. I'm not sure if these guys were willingly part of the SS or not. They could have just been signing up to fight Bolshevism and the High Command put them with the SS.

Anyway, yeah the German kid would have shot the American kid.
