Looking to do a affordable monitor upgrade. Saw this at Costco. Not super up to date on monitor specs but seems like a good deal and good specs?
27" would be my preferred form factor for 1440p.

The main issue spec wise will be them cheaping out with that DP 1.4a port. The problem with 240 hz on DP 1.4 is that it sits right on the edge of the maximum possible uncompressed framerate, and you are likely going to get some black screens, boot issues or other jankiness unless you make one of the changes below.

You have four options to get around that:
1) Reduce the refresh rate
2) Run DSC (Display Stream Compression) - this is "visually lossless," but there are still weird issues like black screens that happen with certain GPUs, especially Nvidia ones, when DSC is enabled.
3) Forego HDR and reduce color depth to 8 bpc.
4) Reduce chroma subsampling from 4:4:4 to 4:2:2

I have an Alienware monitor with the same issue - I picked option 3.

Ok. I think.. Im running into this same problem. Copy/paste from Discord:

Picking ya'lls brains a bit for multi-display setup. Computer is a 14900k Intel, paired with a 4090 ROG Strix. Two monitors are 160 refresh, 4k. One monitor is a 1080p, 60 refresh. I have three 240hz 4k HDMI cables, and 2 display port cables. I can buy another display port cable if that is the problem, but it does not appear to be the problem afaik. : If I plug in all three monitors to the video card, it caps out at just 2 monitors and never sends a display to the third. If I lower all their settings to 60hz, 1080p, the third monitor still doesnt turn on - So I dont quite understand the 4 heads, lowering settings to a 2+1+1 output or anything similar if all three wont work at their lowest settings. The work around Ive found is to take the low end monitor and plug it into the onboard CPU Bound Graphics. Which lowers its resolution to 1388 at 60 hz, or 1080p at 30hz. 30hz is awful, so Im currently using the 1388 resolution. Any suggestions, or what to buy, in order to get the best results from all three monitors?

If you know how to fix it, can you eli5 this stuff?

Theyre "budget" monitors and they do not have an option in their firmware to disable DSC. So work-arounds are the only viable option I assume.

A 4090 is DisplayPort 1.4a, so at max it supports HBR3 transmission mode (look at the table above) and therefore 4K/120 Hz with 8 bit without DSC. Do NOT daisy-chain displays.

The HDMI 2.1 port on the 4090 basically supports 4K at 144 Hz, so it is technically superior, but it only has one. There are exceptions (ASUS TUF/Strix models) that have two.

FIrst, connect all monitors and check if your monitor is even enabled in the Control Panel (Win-I -> System (left Side) -> Display (right side) ). Click each monitor and check if the Setting on the bottom right says "Extend desktop to this display" or some such.

Then scroll down to "Advanced Display". For each display in the upper right select a 120 Hz refresh rate or below, like this:

This is basically the baseline. The Nvidia Control Panel (the old one) when you right-click on the Desktop -> Nvidia Control Panel is also a valid option.

If a monitor does not show up in the Windows list isolate that monitor and check cable/port.


EDIT: Mixing display refresh rates (144 Hz + 120 Hz) does seem have a slight performance impact (1 to 3%) on a 4090, and there are reports about micro-stutters as well as the GPU not powering down VRAM when idle.

I tried different ports - nothing.

Someone is advising me to get a USB Display adapter for the third monitor since its only 60 refresh anyways, that way I could at least have 1080p on it. I'm not sure if that is true, but at this point - I feel like Im just neutering my 160's just to force the odd ball monitor up in resolution. Anyone recommend a specific USB Display adapter if that is indeed the route to go?

So it actually detects the third display (as in, you see the manufacturer/type), but b0rks when you try to enable?

The easiest solution for $0 is to actually connect the 1080p monitor via HDMI/DisplayPort to the motherboard (depending on which port it has), so it is connected to the Intel GPU in your 14900k. It's not a 3D race horse, but web browsing and watching videos work fine.
