Box seems weak but this will convince developers to optimize for steam OS with these specs.

Maybe we will be able to drop windows with our gaming pc's?

If I could play Battlefield Six on linux, I 100% would switch over to Steam OS or Bazzite.

If the Gabe Cube was out today, Id pick it up. I'm currently working on a gaming pc build, but a bird in the hand and all that.

Are they bringing back that controller? Looks like the one they briefly had like 10 years ago. I bought two of them when they were blowing them out for like 5 bucks and never even used them.

those hardware specs are very blah
Yeah, 4k with only 8GB ram kinda requires FSR even if the video chips could handle it natively.

To be clear, the mass market does not have great hardware - the most common video cards on Steam are still 3060 and 4060 families - but depending on when this comes out in 2026, this could look really long in the tooth at launch.

Historically, consoles could get away with lower spec parts because their huge market share meant developers would frequently hand tune branches for those consoles that would work well with those specs. It's unclear if the Gube (Gabecube? What's the running meme here?) will have the market share to make that worthwhile.

Historically the mass market was always mid, concerning PC and video card. Only fucktards spend $2500 on video cards, lol. IMO. Realistically that 3060 will run pretty much entire steam catalogue no problem at 1080p even some on 1440p with shit turned down with decent frames, 60+.

You can already do it for the most part. Since Valve came in with Steamdeck, they've put a ton of work into the pc gaming space for Linux.

Apparently the VRR can run games natively as it’s own OS, so I assume so for your pov videos.
Have they announced any pricing at all on any of the hardware?

The box and controller looks interesting. I tried VR 2 years ago or something but ended up selling it due to crappy games, just felt I was too early in getting one.

Maybe they might be worth getting in a few years.

Well sure but I guess my point was that this box will only help to increase the efforts to break away from current day windows.

It definitely will. This is the perfect storm of Windows 11 being shit and Microsoft continuing to improve on it being shit. The timing for this box is perfect to help people make the switch if they want. Valve won't give up support on it anytime soon like Google would if they made a box.

I do worry about the specs though. Only 8GB VRAM for the GPU for a box that will be used on 4k TV's. You'll get by with it for the majority of games, but not all. RDNA3 means it won't be a super expensive box most likely.

Now you just release SteamOS with a $100 steam gift card and watch as windows systems disappear.

I don't care at all about the box since I still like getting a strong PC and stuff but the controller looks pretty neat so I'm kinda interested in that, especially since my aging DS4 is having stick issues(took it apart, cleaned it, didn't fix anything, and it's not drift so I'm not even sure replacing the sticks would help with anything, luckily it's limited issues). I can see them having no stock at launch though so we'll see, I'll try to get an order in probably.
