How about we make a deal? Any company that uses random loot boxes has to register as a casino and can only be accessible by 18 year olds with verified identities? Fair enough?

No one gives a shit if an adult spends all their money on weeb gatcha bullshit. The idea that these money grubbing whore gambling companies should be able to prey on children with no repercussions, though, because they are "video games" is fucking asinine. A half billion one time "penalty" to continue making multiple billions a year is not a deterrent, but simply the cost of doing business. It is identical to the big pharma model but they bankrupt people with their malfeasance instead of outright maiming or killing them.

To be clear I think whoever lets their kids rack up bills like that is just a shitty parent. It is really fucking easy to lock down and password their devices. My kid (and wife lol) can’t buy shit on the switch cause they don’t know the password. Same with computers and phones.

With that said I also hate all the gatcha bullshit addictive mechanics found in some games these days. Gambling and lootboxes are instant “no” in our house. I simply don’t allow them and don’t play them myself.

And NFTs…I understand how it could be used to do good/cool things but I have zero faith that the majority of NFT games in the future will be that way due to how the mobile market it. I’m sure there will be a few one off NFT games from small studios that are cool and consumer friendly but they’ll likely be outliers.

You guys are squishing multiple separate topics into one argument.

Yeah I can't see how this happens. My kids knew not to even ask. Never mind doing something shady like buying shit on my dime. They would ask me for the occasional skin for whatever the game of the day was, but that was even rare, because they knew I would get nosy about the game they were playing and whom they were playing with.

I have no problems with making digital CCGs illegal (note that none of the CCG in existence are TCG - there is no trading whatsoever going on in those games, unlike real TCGs).
MTGO has a regular buy/sell/trade card economy just like cardboard, MTGA has no trading.

It can't be the only one. I realize that most are based around the shitty Hearthstone economy right now, but I know some had trading. Didn't Artifact have trading cards? The game just sucked?

Your a good dad. Shock how that ameliorates most problems discussed.

No, you're right-wing socialists.

(Hint: that's the bad kind.)

socialism is inherently authoritarian so there is no soft fluffy pillow kind like the one you imagine in your head, the "dictatorship of the proletariat" is literal.

They're not "preying on kids" because kids have no money. They're preying on shitty parents who give their kids full access to their bank accounts then blame everyone else for their shitty parenting

If you don't think they are targeting kids with their gambling shit, then you are retarded beyond repair. It doesn't excuse shitty parents allowing their kids unfettered access to credit cards or PayPal or however they are getting taken for loads of money, but the explicit targeting of children is absolutely happening and needs to be dealt with accordingly.

Oh fuck off with your think of the children pearly clutching bullshit.

Of course you target kids when you're trying to sell shit to kids. You watch Saturday morning cartoons growing up? You think that shit was targeted at adults?

Well my kids were brought up in the dark ages of not letting them have phones until they were older, early 2000s so I never had to deal with this shit. But you dont need to allow kids to have access to credit cards and other methods. Usually it happens to younger kids when you give them your phone and the game is already linked to an account or CC or apple pay or whatever. Sure there are chargebacks or whatever, but this shit should not exist in the first place.

And its not just the kids... There are many people out there that are just prone to be gambling addicts. Sure they are adults and can handle themselves, or should be able to. But the bottom line is this shit hits those dopamine centers just like blackjack or poker or whatever the fuck. Even worse because its usually more graphical and wow moment when you do score. So yeah its like a fucking casino but not regulated at all, and worse of all they dont have to pay out shit, which casinos are also regulated on. So its pretty much all the benefits of a casino, without any regulation and they dont have to pay ot shit other than pixels which are essentially free.

Also to add we all here come from a culture of gaming and know the ins and outs of the industry and follow the trends, etc... But most people dont and they are pretty fucking oblivious to what these companies are doing.

So, when the parents fuck up. (Also, these days you need pwd/biometric confirmation for in-app purchases.)

I'm not saying it's admirable for companies to do this kind of targeting, but it's entirely avoidable if you pay a small amount of attention.

But most people... they are pretty fucking oblivious to what these companies are doing.

It's their job to be educated when it comes to their kids' activities. If people weren't obviously, this approach wouldn't work and companies wouldn't do it.

I cant believe you guys are siding with this fucking bullshit these companies are getting away with. Im not talking about government taking over control of on line and mobile games, but some fucking regulation would go a long way here. And we would all benefit with actually getting games again that were valued and bought on their GAMES content, instead of graphical interfaces to siphon off as much money from you as they can. Like holy shit.

I don't see anyone siding with the companies here. I hate that shit as much as you do, but regulation is not the right response. The right response is to stop giving these fuckers money.

Then that's their right. Just because we don't like something doesn't mean you cry for big daddy government to come in and make things the way you want it.

Yeah. What we see is the market speaking. Maybe the market is a moron, but there it is.

People do all kinds of voluntary stupid shit, but that doesn't mean it should be illegal.
