Growing up lower middle class and being scared financially up through my early 30s had me act similarly. The fear of any loss was too much to part with anything. These days I call it nostalgia sometimes, but I know I have no reason to hold onto t-shirts 2 sizes too small that I’ll never wear again.
It can be emotionally liberating to clean house and move on.

I grew up very poor and have the same issue. I still have all my consoles and games from growing up. Part of its nostalgia, part of it is, idk, fear or something? Another part is I hate throwing something away that I know can’t be bought anymore, or is in new condition. I’d like to sell a bunch of pristine board games I haven’t played in years because I can’t stomach throwing something that’s practically brand new in the trash.

It's just garbage bros. Literally bag it, drop it at one of those parking lot trailer donation places and enjoy freedom. You will never miss things you don't use daily and it's a good habit to toss shit you don't touch after 6 months (unless it's seasonal like a snowblower).

I went in many hoarder houses and homes on the borderline back when I was an auctioneer and you don't want to be that old person living in filth surrounded by garbage and yes your old game systems you haven't touched in 20 years are garbage.

If you don't have the willpower then let someone else do it for you.

Unless they are sports games, most old games are not garbage and have value. Can easily take em to a used game store and get cash for them.

i adopt the inverse position! my wife's parrents are crazy in a way. they saved all her childrens toys. and she was an only child doted upon.all the jurassic park origional dinosaurs (seriously i have like five of the full size t-rexes of various eras), plastic tubs full of beanie babies (these are actually semi garbage). tons of barbies. so many of those briar horses and my little poneys. my wife saved EVERY dvd and console. when we moved last i got the attic Air Conditioned and organzied that crap.

Now my kids are 4 and 6. we've been able to give them a few toys every now and then from the 'stash for a whole heaping shit load less than they cost at walmart.

we hauled out the wii and let the kids play it for a few weeks. we could do the same with the n64 (tho it's moot with the nintendo emulators they offer now)

And i told the wife that her crazy ass parents were right. with very little comparative effort i can seal them away in plastic gasket boxes and my kids' kids will have endless toys for no more dollars (aside from teh cost of the tubs i guess. and dessication packets).

So if the olde people had maintained things to give to their offspring better rather than throwing them away when they tire of them....somethingsomethingboomers.

Yeah, I find myself wishing I hadn't gotten rid of my old consoles and games. Thankfully kept my GBA and some games I picked up while I was in Japan for it. I'm still incredibly salty that my N64 set and my old Pokemon GBC got lost somewhere in a move. I'm usually not too much of a keeper of "stuff" but certain things I wouldn't mind still having a solid collection of, and physical media is one, these days. I am especially regretful of selling off my old model kit collection due to a move and not having space for them. I miss a lot of those now that I actually have space to display them.

Yeah, this is the thing. You can't just go out and buy new versions of the old shit. All of it that will ever exist stopped being made decades ago, and some percentage of it stops existing every year. Check out some retro forums. There are people that will pay good money for your old ass atari and crt televisions (and whatever other old thing you happen to have) if you don't want them any more, or donate them somewhere if nothing else. Sure, tossing them in the trash is more expedient, but it's always a bit sad to intentionally destroy something that can't be bought again new.

Never was a console player. I eventually got rid of all my old PC games that were DOS based. You could make them run but I had already done them at least once, somer more.

yeah every now and then i'll spend like 6 hours updating my steam deck to have all the latest emulators (emudeck update), think carefully about which ROMs to copy over from my 1TB NAS library yuge collection, organize the steam pages, make it look nice and pretty, and not play a single game.

rinse and repeat every 8-15 months. i'm not a gamer, i'm a digital hoarder

This. When we moved across country I played ROMS on my laptop.

Old systems I usually passed on to my nephew and/or friends. The last Xbox I bought (the one that had red ring of death, 360? ) I hobbled it to get it to work/hacked the piss out of it, and finally threw it away. Never bought another MS console either but didn't need to as most games are playable on PC. Gave my PS5 to a friend that has 3 kids so they can get some enjoyment out of it. Didn't play it for same reason, most good PS games are on PC now.

I dont remember which of you linked these back in March when they were preorder, but they finally arrived. Work great on PC. Got everything running on SteamDeck, but it took a little effort. Got all the GH/RB games and like 5k other songs.
