The whole game feels like a grind. "See that hall over there that you have to run through 100 times, well those 8 skeletons will be respawned EVERY SINGLE TIME you want to run though it." Fucking busy work that's not fun. "Want to know anything about the characters in the game? Well read this fucking scroll because we don't want to tell you about it though the actual story that you play."

I learned to kite in EQ, so it wasn't hard, just MMO tedium in a single player game.

If you’re running through anywhere 100 times, you suck, git gud.

Since you quoted skeletons I’ll assume you’re quoting crypt areas that are specifically designed to have special spawn rules. Git gud again.

Figured "100 times" was a good round number to exaggerate for effect...

My only real memory of Dark Souls 2 is going in completely blind on an emulated PS2 copy (also fuck any company that does exclusives), where all the tutorials are in PS2 controller, not M&K, and spending half of my ~4 hours of play time time getting lost. Usually I like getting lost while exploring games, but not when there are fucking "fast" respawn chores, every time I want to double back and see where the other forks in the path take me (before I get too far the other way). All the while trying to remember what keys are mapped to what function, since all it said was hit triangle, square, left or some shit to do this and that.

I wrote off that annoying experience of a game to emulation suckyness, so gave Elden Ring a shot. I found the exploration in that game much better, since with the outdoor mobs, I could just run past most brain-dead trash respawning bullshit (hell, you could run past it inside too, but it was more dangerous). Since I hit a few invisible walls, I kept playing the game, until I hit the third invisible wall (between the main city and the northern mountains). By then, I had enough of however many hours of the same exact dull kitting combat that mages are stuck with and no desire to reroll to a "good" class that they are supposedly good at making.

There are plenty of other games to play, no need to try to force myself to like them. I also thought vanilla Oblivion and Fallout 3/4 sucked (dumbed down Morrowind so they could sell it to console retards), with Skyrim being mediocre at best; only saved by the modding community (which are all much "easier").

Sounds like these games just aren't for you which is fine, they aren't for everyone. But I would absolutely hate fromsoft if they removed everything that made them unique.

I don’t think *not having a pause button* makes them unique lol. It’s just bad user experience.

I could understand no pause button during combat maybe

These are the same people who think staring at a spellbook for 20 minutes is peak gameplay. It's no wonder they can't figure out how to pause in the game.

You sound like you really just suck at these games. Also ds2 was ps3 and above.

Who you callin an EQ worshiper? I'm saying I did my time grinding for 10 lifetimes in EQ with hours on end of insta-death kiting if I fucked up (20 some years ago and I still am sick of the AA grind). Outside of a few bosses, Elden Ring as a mage wasn't harder than that (some Triumvirate boss fucked me up without resorting to summoning a follower).

I don't like, what feels to be similar grinding mechanics due to constant respawning in single player games, full stop. Also, I'm not buying MnM.

I don't recall seeing Inthemidstoflions even in the MnM thread.

Hateyou Hateyou PS1, PS3, Xbone... it's all console trash to me (not that there is anything wrong with that)! Maybe it was DS1. I think they released an official ported version 6 months after I soured myself on the game though the emulator.

This is a troll post, right? You never have to go through any area more than maybe a couple of times, unless you keep dying which is true for every game ever.

Dark Souls 2 is also the only one where things stop respawning after a certain amount of kills and prevents you from doing the "grinding" you hate so much.

The complaint of "I chose glass cannon build which I hate and refuse to play what I want" is A+ criticism, though.

It must have been Dark Souls 1 then, it was a long time ago, and since I didn't enjoy the game, there was no incentive to remember that many details outside of I hate constantly respawning trash and no story to be found. Again, I can write off a lot of the overall negative experience to shitty emulator issues and trying to remember what key does what, but those are my two gameplay gripes in my short experience with the game.

As for Elden Ring, other than small gameplay hints or item locations after playing a bit, I don't generally look up shit before first playthroughs and usually play a mage first, if available. So that's what I did did. Looking up builds is for brain dead grindfests like Diablo 3 (which I assumed Elden Ring wasn't, since GR Martin was attached to it). I like messing around with a variety of spells, except after the first or second upgraded spell, the "better" spells I found were all less efficient, leading to OOM and less damage overall. Spam the same spell for almost the whole game, much fun, such wow.

I think I got over level 30, maybe into the 40s, or some such. In order to unlock the invisible wall into the main city I had to get some item from the underground cave area, so did all that. Then, on the way back to the main city, I finished off what I missed at the Academy when I went straight there at around level 8 (mostly just the end boss lady was left I think). I think I did the castle right next to where you spawn at that time too.

The only From Soft game that even vaguely resembled Dark Souls on PS2 was King's Field IV. Even Demon's Souls was a PS3 exclusive and that predated the rest of the genre.

I didn't play it on a PS anything. I don't buy consoles and I don't play consoles (usually), so keeping track of of the generations means nothing to me.

I did "hack" one of my roomate's PS2 and pirated a bunch of games for it for a few years... so that's basically the default console I go to, when thinking of consoles!

Really. Fromsoft games have a certain aesthetic and style. Even with all of their success they still maintain them. Either you learn to enjoy their archaic menus and game style or you don't. Once you get used to it I find it great. The gameplay speaks for itself and is fun.

But to each your own.

Did you perhaps not understand that resting at a bonfire/rest point respawned all the mobs? The way you’re quoting “respawns” sounds like you made zero effort to understand the game systems. Nothing (outside crypt area skeletons) in these games simply respawns. Simply doubling back to check a different path will not have you fighting things you already killed.

If you rest and reset, the stuff resets.

Respawns are respawns. Didn't you need to rest at a campfire to save the game? So hopping from one campfire to another to save progress and heal, then doubling back to see what you missed would get you respawns. It was a long time ago and it wasn't an experience I burned into memory (outside of emulators suck). It was more of a foreshadowing of not liking Elden Ring.

Tbh, Idk what EQ means in this context or what the MnM thread even means. I'm just happy to be here.

That being said, I am good at souls games. That doesn't mean you can't provide constructive feedback to make the games better. They're very good games, they're just an 8/10 rather than a 10/10 due to a few quality of life issues. Issue they themselves recognize. It's why DS3 and BB have such quality of life improvements over DS1. And ER has such quality of life improvements over DS3.

Damn it now I want to replay ER again. I have a giant backlog and not much time but dammit now I want to play ER. Didn't really care for the DLC though, felt like a rehash with the difficulty turned to 11. I mean the ER one , not night reign or whatever that is called.

FYI I never could really get into the Dark Souls games. I didn't really give them anything resembling a fair shot and I have them all on Steam. Did like Sekiro though.
