Disagree. If Sony found the price to renew the license to be to expensive, so be it. Expecting or demanding that Sony pay whatever the cost might be to renew is dumb, unless you also think Sony would have the right to demand another payment from their users to play those movies again?

I'd expect Sony to not sell something they cannot guarantee to have available later on and if they do I'd expect them to negotiate in a way that makes it so they only have to remove it from the shop without removing access to paying customers, but here we are and after that yes I do expect them to pay more for the license that they themselves decided to sell in the first place, or otherwise to reimburse people, if we lived in a world where corporations didn't dictate the laws. But as I pointed out for Steam, I basically don't have a choice(well other than another store that is even more likely to do that shit earlier) and so for now I'm just banking on Gaben finding a magical underwater city with his cool yacht and getting gifted a mermaid's liver so he lives eternally. But realistically I accept that in the future I'll lose all my games because some suits want to make more money. Doesn't make me happy about it or cool with the fact it happens to other stuff.

I felt like this for a few years in my early-mid twenties, I think. Proud to pirate media.
At this point I’m glad I don’t still feel that way. If it’s worth watching, why not pay for it? If it’s not worth paying for, why waste time watching it? I really don’t think it’s something to be proud of, especially if we’re people who see the obvious decline in quality of media. Shouldn’t we want to legitimately support the media we deem worthwhile?
Especially when nowadays “paying for it” is often as simple as a small monthly sub to one of several streaming services, getting you access to a zillion media titles.

I'd agree if it was happening on other platforms as well, would be an indicator of something unreasonable upstream with licensing - but absent that I put it all on the platform holder offering a lesser experience.

I have honestly never read the fine print on games you buy from the PS Store. I’ve bought mostly old games, but I did buy Hogwarts Legacy, the new Batman Lego games for the kids, and the remaster of Ghost of Tsushima at full price when released. I wonder if 3rd party games could evaporate? I don’t think they do on Steam. Just new purchases.

I am completely on board with what you're saying and do support the stuff I like with actual dollars. I do own "some" movies. Most of which are old as fuck, and some I've bought twice to update them to a media format easier to use. VHS > Blue ray for example. I am not buying any movie that is digital, and as Pyros is pointing out - if I had a choice, I wouldnt buy my games on Steam, GOG, Epic, etc. either. Because, as we're discussing - and maybe you're missing peoples point - you dont own that fucking shit. Never mind the ownership rights of games. Denuvo fucking over people and games needing to be online always when its a fucking single player game are genuine reasons to pirate there, too.
I own things like The Expanse series, Babylon series, etc. on Blue ray. But I can go through a fucking laundry list of movies that Ive seen for almost a full decade and not a single one of them would I purchase a hard copy of. So the white knighting "pay for content you like" is still alive and well. But when 99% of the shit that comes out is fucking slop - you're not better than anyone pirating just because you pay for shit like Sinners or whatever fucking god awful movie thats came out.
Of all the things to be proud about, you're mad at people pirating when the very fucking conversation we're having is about a vendor nuking everyones fucking library. Fucking brain dead take.

Well sure, if Sony decides to not get a license to sell (rent) these movies, that is on Sony for offering a lesser service as you say. Yet, Sony is in no way obligated to continue to renew such a license indefinitely, whether their contract is worse or better than what other companies get is meaningless. Sony simply decide they weren't going to pay, as is their right. I am sure somewhere in the ToS people had to accept in order purchase any of these movies it clearly states the buyer could lose access at any time.

There’s two separate issues here. Piracy, and digital “ownership.” Contrary to your faulty assumptions, I am in fact against digital ownership being revocable. I’m about as pro-property rights as you can get. But at the same time, since that’s the world we live in, I align my purchasing accordingly. I also think it’s a bit weird to declare Sony the devil for this, considering nobody went into their digital media purchases ignorant of the realities of digital ownership. Or if they did, it’s their own fault. It sucks, but Sony (as gay as those faggots are lately) doesn’t owe anyone the bad business decision of paying too much to retain licensing rights when someone is trying to hold them over a barrel.
On the piracy issue, I presented a couple of simple questions that you completely glossed over, other than saying you pay for stuff “you like.” Well, that’s good. But I still don’t understand…
If you’re pirating things you don’t like… why? Are you spending your most valuable resource (time) watching/playing them? That seems very odd. It seems more likely that you actually do like that media enough to watch it, so like… how is this not hypocritical?
If you like something and want to use it, shouldn’t you pay for it?

I have 4 different subscriptions that cost more than what I traditionally paid for cable and I STILL cannot watch over half the TV shows and movies that I would like to at any given point in time. I have absolutely 0 remorse or qualms about pirating shit that I want on other platforms because giant multinationals want to wall off old shows and movies for $150+ a year.

Is it really stealing when it’s known and detailed up front that this sort of thing can happen? Did any of the adults in this thread seriously buy movie media from the PS store not understanding that this was a possibility? It’s entirely possible that studio (or whatever) is just trying to extort Sony since they, too, understand the situation.

A nerve? No. I just think its "confusing to me" to be anti-piracy in a conversation where people were duped out of the licenses that they paid for. Very much in the same vein of thought, as stated by others, that apparently that company does not give a fuck about you as a consumer, and you should not give a fuck about them as a company. This isnt the first time this has happened and it wont be the last.
Sure, its listed in the TOS that they can revoke your access at any time. But a few Euro countries do not allow companies to obfuscate the time on their products licensing within the TOS. Or to be specific to the situation, "Access to this media is granted until such and such date and time. Further access is subject to licensing agreements" at the very forefront of the purchase agreement. Would that solve the problem? No. Would people still agree to the purchase expecting "lifetime access"? Yes. If you saw that access to your product was being ripped away the very next day, or a month from the time of purchase - would you still purchase it? Not likely.
You and I have very different attitudes towards pirating and we can just leave it at that.

Currently, it’s a service, not a good. You are paying them for the service of being allowed to download bits and bytes from their servers. You are not purchasing a physical item that you then own and control. Those bits and bytes are pre-arranged into a digital sort-of-good that is not durable in the way most goods are. Also, I’m assuming this PS movie media thing was like Amazon Video, where you’re paying for access to stream the title, as opposed to downloading it like a digital game. If it was possible to download the purchased movies then I don’t know what to say. But if not, then again, did anyone pay for them and then delude themselves into thinking they then owned that title?
