Hell, my dad still bitches about cars not having carburetors anymore and hates electronic fuel injection.
New doesn't always mean progress. If you want a car analogy, this is more like BMW charging a monthly subscription for heated seats.

And yes, I realized long ago the death of physical media was inevitable. Storage requirements have increased drastically and yet no one has any interest whatsoever in developing a successor to Blu-ray (which is 20 years old now). DVD was replaced in only a decade.

No company is interested in making affordable read-only [insert format] that last for 30+ years. All 3 aspects are for archiving not for money-making.

I'm old school. I still listen to music at the house (not the truck obviosly) on reel to reel through a 70s receiver. I can rebuild and tune a carb much much easier than coming up with a tune on digital fuel injection myself (not just somoene elses tune) but I really don't see the gotta have disc for a PC or console (though I'm not a console player).

The idea of losing the physical copy doesn't bother me as much as the fact that I cannot download the game to my hard drive and play it off of their platform. Medium be damned.

Yeah, the impermanence of it is extremely frustrating. That whole fiasco with Scott Pilgrem Versus the World: The Game sucked, one of my kids really liked it and then poof it was gone and we couldn’t download it. He was not impressed.

The problem is gamers are still going to buy games because it’s our heroine and we love the needle too much.

It has to suck having bought a disc drive PS5, only for them to kill off physical mid-generation instead of even waiting for the PS6. Doing so after deleting people's movies is also quite something.

Aside from price, the "upsides" of consoles is nearing nonexistence now if it just means a locked down, gimped PC by any other name, running proprietary shitware, with bad UI, poor security, now an even more closed off storefront without a second hand market, paid online, woke slop exclusives, and all of the old IPs are either being taken behind the shed or mutilated for the mythical modern audience.

The crux of the issue is that the average consoomer is still going to eat the shit sandwich, so bad practices are only going to get even worse.

It's getting killed in 2028, which is hardly mid gen when the PS5 released in 2020. In fact it's likely to be around when they release or announce the PS6. Still a dick move
