Me being a EQ fanboy of old days, I though the whole WOW thing itself was a watered down version mmo. Didnt really appreciate it until later when I tried it for like my 2nd or 3rd time when I was done with the whole EQ thing.

Fuck. I’ll admit that I would probably be grinding away Classic - TBC - Wrath in perpetuity if my one year in Wrath Classic told me the social aspect is mostly dead and guilds are retarded with expectations and lean so mercenary.

I have limited time as a dad gamer, but I ran a dk and regularly topped our meters as Unholy and Frost and outdid our other DKs but I didn’t want to have 2-3 alts and grind runs each night and live online. So hell - I guess I was part of the problem. Can’t go home.

I fucking loved those games. (And Legion).

Forst/Unholy was great... blood was godmode in beta...but they killed that so fast. I was a dad gamer during those days, the wife started playing (whew....) and I would almost always get yelled at for "U know ur wearing your pvp grear right?" because I was lazy and would not have 2 sets or care to change or really need to... I still performed at or above the "needed" DPS etc of a DK in the situation at hand - my wife loved to PVP in the battlegrounds, even if she...was...not that great... so we would always have those points more than the stuff in PVE- so I was always PVP geared lol

Classic WoW is the only game that has come close to original EQ. TBC onwards introduced game systems that deviated too much into non-MMO territory and into ARPG.

40… while not as big as EQ still seemed somewhat “big”… 20…10mans? Bah…

Classic WoW was something, almost had it back in Litchking…as TBC should not have existed….

The “story” many wanted was to continue WC3… WoW classic reestablished the world and got it to be a “living world” and did so well… but then it was time to get back to “the story” and threat at hand… oh…wait…hold up…we gatta go to stupid draenor or whatever and no the blacks wont just go back to Africa or even the Liberia we made… i mean orcs wont go back to Outland even after its been “saved” because reasons….

It's something easily forgotten to time... WC3 and WC3:FT was setting up the storyline for WoW Classic to go straight into WoTLK. There was zero reason really to have BC after Classic.

Fuck EQ and fuck anyone who thinks WotLK wasn't the absolute zenith of MMO enjoyment.

EQ literally let you throw hundreds of people at bosses - the only downside was your raid turned into a slideshow. To break into the elemental planes in PoP, most of the server decided to work together to drop Rallos Zek. There was like 150 people there - I spent the entire fight looking down at the floor because it was the only way to not crash. Boss died in like 2 minutes lol

Was that the only time and way you did those encounters?

I know I’m gonna get eviscerated for this. And rightly so in some respects because they used this to homogenize every last ounce of flavor out rather than accept some imbalance or get more creative.

That said, I enjoyed the shit out of Wrath’a Bring the Player not the Class mantra in terms of tanking on a paladin and DK and DPS as a paladin and the various warlock specs. In hindsight, Ghostcrawler was better than some people gave credit for while still having some annoying aspects. I’d take the game as designed by the Cosby crew over anything since.

Most of the encounters in that game could be solved by throwing enough bodies at a boss so long as your tanks didn’t die/ could hold aggro and your dps didn’t eat flurries

I don’t recall us doing anything as extreme as the Rallos Zek Zerg on our server. We had a large amount of people when we woke the sleeper I suppose, but it was because the strat we used to kill the last warder was the 100% ranged strat and we had suboptimal dps due to like half our guilds being melee oriented, so we needed bodies there. It was also when DAOC came out and we lost like 1/3rd the guild to people playing that - officers were begging people to just log on for that one raid. I remember I kept ducking in and out from behind the wall and tossing throwing stars as my contribution lol

EQ peaked with POP. WOW peaked with Legion. WOTLK was fun for sure, but it was just setting the stage for Legion. The game systems and story and artifacts and everything else were at their absolute peak for Legion.

The problem with declaring Legion to be the peak is that only faggots stuck with WoW through Pandaria and Warlords.

You didn't have to stay through them to play Legion. You could have quit after WOTLK (or at any other point) and come back for Legion. A lot of people did just that.

Pandaria was the best xpac because they added monks

Also brewmaster tanks were OP as fuck - I could literally self sustain and not die on raid bosses before they removed that tank mechanic where your dps and healing got buffed the more damage you took

Wasn't legion what BC "should" have been?
In a lot of ways, yes. It was when the players got strong enough to kill the gods. It was also the last xpac from the Cosby guys who actually knew how to make a good game. The Temu DEI replacements Blizzard brought in have sucked. Hard.
