Halo was great but looking back on it that shit was a downgrade from Quake in the 90s. Gameplay wise anyway. We then got more than 20 years of chest high wall shooters.

I remember watching a show with my wife (She loves that Married at First sight show) and all of a sudden I got a pop up on the screen "Would you like to order the outfit they have on?" I was .. "WHAT THE FUCK?" and got to turning off some of that shit immediately. Too bad I couldn't block married at first sight too.
Did you do a factory reset yet and then refuse to connect it to the network again? Might want to change the network password while you're at it, since Apple and Amazon have already been caught recording network passwords, like a decade or so ago. I also put all that streaming shit on it's own Virtual Network, so changing passwords is easier due to less devices to update.

If you watch anything on Amazon prime you get constant ‘buy now’ popups you can click and order shit. It’s gross.
Set up a mini-pc/server connected to the TV with wireless mouse/keyboard/controller and watch everything through Firefox(with UBlock Origins) or Brave. No ads on anything but of course more of a hassle to use.

Checked my LG OLED and all the really egregious privacy violating stuff was turned off by default. Still shouldn't be there at all, and I'll never use the built-in WebOS shit, but at least they didn't turn it on with the updates too.

I don't get any weird/invasive popups on my Shield TV when I watch Prime Video either. Not sure if it's just not in the app or if it's being blocked by my pi-hole. I had to get rid of the Fire stick on my other TV though; they have completely ruined that with ads everywhere and no way to control the UI at all anymore. And that's an older Fire OS (Android) model, I can't even imagine what the newest Linux-based trash is like with zero ability to sideload at all. Kind of wild having to go back to built-in Roku because it's least enshittified option now.

Was going to reply just that. I didn't see the hype of Halo, still don't. IIRC the big thing about Halo was being able to network Xbox's together and do what PC gamers were doing for years? It did pretty much straighten out the console control for well every game since. The actual gameplay was just not my thing.

What got me to buy an Xbox was KOTOR (I think that was exclusive at first) and the first Fable. I thought Gears was a lot better when it debuted on the 360.

I didn't have a xbox back in the day, and was always interested when my friends from school talked about how awesome this new Halo game was until I finally played it at someone's house. I was playing Doom 2, Quake, and a lot of Unreal Tournament at the time and Halo just felt like garbage especially vs UT. To this day I still don't get it.

I think halo were the first games to have bungies special sauce aim assist on consoles. I never played them but I read that somewhere.

This was pretty much it. We had a lot of lan parties where people brought 3 tvs, 3 consoles and everyone brought their own controllers. It was the first time my pleb friends could enjoy playing with more than 4 people.

Those tvs weighed hundreds of pounds back then, lol. It didn't stop us though. We would have huge groups turn up once word of mouth spread. Upwards of 25 people crammed into a small apartment with tvs and lan cables everywhere.

Yeah I remember going over to somebody's house in college for some party and they had Halo set up and we're like hey you want to play.

It was dog shit because of the stupid controller. I'm like why the hell don't I have a mouse and keyboard, because this would be easy. I eventually had a roommate who had an Xbox and I did the co-op story stuff through the first two games I think and it was fun, but it's not anything I would have ever wanted to play competitively when you had stuff like quake and CS, and even epic games like the first Planetside.

Watch the video. Apparently if it’s turned off the tv still does its data collection with a flag that says you opted out.

I’m one of those that think Halo was nothing special what so ever. Copy pasted time waster with the library level. There were so many better shooters out on PC at the time and the only reason why this was a big deal was because console gamers had never seen anything remotely to close to what you could play on PC at the time.

LG shouldn't be a problem if you keep the TV offline.

I was also a pc gamer at thee time and even big into FPS. and certainly called Halo, babies first FPS back in the day. But nowadays I can look back and appreciate it.
first lets remember some dates:

Halo1 was 2001. Halo 2 was 2004.

Half life was 1998, counterstrike 2000, tf 2 -2007, tf classic was 99., hl2 was 2004.
Tribes was 1998.
quake was 96. quake 2 97, q3 arena 99, team arena 2000. (hexen -95m hexen 2 -97, heretic 94, h2-98), quake 4 was 2005.
Return to castle wolfenstien-2001.
golden eye was 97.
Unreal was 98 and 99. and 2003.
Metroid prime was 2002.
battlefield 1942 -2002.
call of duty -2003
planetside 2003.
(obviously there were others, but these are some of the key players.)

So, Halo made console fps work. and sold it. yes, goldeneye did as well.. but, didn't build a franchise from it. Perfect dark 2000 did not keep it going. Metroid was barely an fps, and came out after.

A HEAVY focus on story. quake 2 had a storyline. Half-life really pioneered heavy story. But, frankly, HALO took cinematics, and storytelling to another level. its even more story driven then Half-life was.
yes, goldeneye, perfect dark and no one wants to live forever-2000 and other such fps did have heavy story too..
But we can see, the big players in PC gaming were focused on pvp arenas in 2000. tribes, quake 3, unreal.
and with that music. some of it is very memorable.

a focus on outdoor environments, and vehicles. both were barely a thing prior. q3:TA added large outdoor environments to prove it could be done, and compete with tribes. sure some did it before, but halo made it a feature.

halo 1 was pretty game changing for its time. by Halo 2 in 2004.. yeah, we have battlefield, metroid, RoCW, half-life 2, CS, CoD... and probably some others im forgetting.
But Halo absolutely did its job well. even if you went through all the smaller fps on pc, that might have been trying similar things. nothing nails the storyline, visuals, gameplay, etc all at once. the game is epic has hell. its undeniable.

notice the death of those arena shooters, for story driven, larger pvp battlegrounds... you think halo didnt have a part in that?

It probably played some role, but HL1/HL2 really set the gold standard for "storytelling in a FPS" model that virtually every single player FPS since then has emulated.

As for multiplayer, it really took innovation to make FPS grab hold of players. Halo had some decent multiplayer, but ultimately it was just rehashing existing FPS modes like CTF. Games like the Battlefield series I think played a larger role in vehicle combat being popularized. Stuff like Team Fortress/Counter Strike (modded off HL originally) also started to mix up the online modes to push them away from FFA death match stuff or vanilla CTF.

That being said, I could accept the argument that Halo played a role in popularizing FPS on consoles, which may have had knock on effects down the line. But Halo ultimately was also only an Xbox game and games like Call of Duty are what really set the tone for the console FPS market in terms of multiplayer across PS and Xbox.

Yeah, my favorite of that time was Tribes. I played the shit out of that.
