I dont see how Randyll Tarly could be a small role, he's set up exiting book 5 as basically the only remaining authority figure outside the Septon in King's Landing. Obviously that's slightly different in the series since Olenna Tyrell hasn't gone back to Highgarden yet, but she obviously doesn't have any real pull with how disrupted the throne has become. If Randyll Tarly was going to be confined to some minor role in the show, I assume they would just exclude him from the show entirely and merge his character into Kevan Lannister, who managed to not get perforated by Varys.

Not trying to bust your balls Chuk, but I really don't think it's Tarly.

Do love Ian McShane though, ever since I saw him in that horrendous Dark is Rising movie. Despite the great live action work he's done, I think him voicing Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda is still my favorite role he's ever done.

No offense taken, its just the first thing i thought of for randyll tarly. In the books he came across this george c scott type of character, ian mcshane has that same harsh black & white gruffness to him.

Randyll Tarly.
Septon Meribald
One of Ironborn.

Kind of old to be one of the Greyjoys. Meribald might be too small of a role, but he does get an awesome speech. Safe bet is Tarly since his role is going to be pivotal for the next season, a new Tywin basically. Then there's the crazy long shot that will never happen idea that 'mystery role' actually means something and it he will be Howland Reed.

Well Tarly doesn't have to be too big of a role. Sam and Gilly stop by the Tarly residence and we could get three or four scenes with Randall throughout the whole season tops. It would be a good case of maximising a small part with a few good lines from an actor with outsize presence.

the best hopes would be Howland Reed, it would fit in with the flashback to the tower of joy since he is the only living person to have witnessed it first hand.

I'm still getting over my excitement at his casting as ANYONE in the show to worry about who it will be specifically.

i feel like i'm turning into astro, i have no idea who randyll tarly is
More importantly than being Sam's father, he's basically the only person still alive outside the Sept who has any authority left in King's Landing once Varys kills Kevan. Margaery and her cousins or whomever else she was accused with were released into his custody to await their trial. Cersei will undoubtedly be enraged at her humiliation, and Randyll will most likely be stuck opposing both her and the Sept.

Unless they dug up Joffrey for Widow's Wail, the Lannisters are the only family in Westeros who don't have Valyrian steel.

Widow's Wail have been passed on to Tommen. Tyrion guesses theirs maybe 200 Valyrian blades in Westeros but a lot of those could be daggers and steak knives. Each sword seems to be a big deal, Tywin couldn't buy one, they're all named. I think I remember reading that a house would be considered fortunate to have one so they're not super common.

It's astonishing how many people, for reasons I've never understood, think that Joffrey was buried with Widow's Wail.

Probably because they show him laid up with it at his funeral service.

And it isn't that people thinkt he Lannisters are the only great house without one, just that it is surprising that a rich as fuck house like them could be without one.

It's never mentioned in the books, GRRM said in some interview or something that it was passed on to Tommen. In the show, as Chaos mentioned, he's holding it as he lays in state, so Tywin would have had to nick it on the sly to keep Cersei from flipping out over it.

Ian McShane would have been awesome as Tywin Lannister. Not that Charles Dance wasn't, he totally was, but McShane would have hit that one out of the park as well.

I don't think they could have picked a better Tywin Lannister for the show.

Yes, he's a little different from the book version, but the book version wouldn't have been as good for the show.
