Corrrect me if I'm wrong, but the Lannisters don't even survive the battle of blackwater without Tywin and the Tyrells (because Stannis killed Renly) showing up with reinforcements. The dwarf played his trick with the wildfire, but I can't remember anything in the show indicating that Tyrion has a strong military mind, much less the greatest.

It's dumb, for sure, but the wife decision cost him his life. The Theon decision caused his brothers to be killed (or so he thought) and forced him to fight on two fronts, plus hurt his prestige in the eyes of others since Winterfell was his home. That's a lot worse than letting go of a good hostage, imo. I honestly don't recall any decisions or counsel that Cat made that were worse than those two decisions by Robb.

Cat set everything in motion when she kidnapped Tyrion, which led to that confrontation in the streets of King's Landing where Jaime stabbed Ned and killed Jory. Pretty much chaos. It was calculated, since he was able to pin the blame on the lannisters and have access to Lysa to marry into the Vale. Not fully confirmed in the books. I think someone said that the other part of it was that Cersei would be easier to manipulate than Robert, and if Jon had lived he would have told robert about his illegitimate children.
Balerion and the two dragons that he is often mentioned with were gigantic. I think one of the quotes from the books says that when Balerion flew his shadow covered entire towns.
The more recent ones were very small. (I think Dany's dragons are already bigger than those ones; Drogon will probably get as big as Balerion.)

The book version has Tyrion having more elaborate strategic preparations and battle management; it's just that he doesn't have the resources to defend the city forever since the armies are out in campaign. He still forces Stannis to a standstill for hours, until the reinforcements show up.
As usual, the show's version is a pale shadow of the original.

It was Tyrion that got them making Wildfire and came up with the chain idea, and it was the wildfire + chain that killed so many of Stannis' men. Even with Tywin showing up to break the siege there's no guarantee they could have defeated Stannis pre-wildfire clusterfuck.

Also the whole "it begins/ends" is all meta because Lyanna was the spark for Robert's rebellion and yet well after the war was lost the Kingsguard were still willing to die guarding her as their dead prince had commanded.
So not only was the fight epic, it was also sad and pointless. Rhaegar was dead, Lyanna was dying, and it's her brother for fuck's sake. Jaime "shit for honor" was right, vow's are for nuts.
