Liberalism is a concept of freedom covering issues like elections, trade, religion, speech, and private property. Our founding fathers helped pour the mold. It was the whole point of the war. The democrats and the republicans have both become more collectivist (less liberal) over time, especially in the 20th century. They tend to emphasize different aspects of liberalism now, but the republicans are more in line with classic liberalism and the democrats have been pushing for increased socialism.

tl;dr the terms are applied improperly in the U.S.

Both Colt and Ruger are headquartered in CT. THe CEO of Colt made a statement over a week ago that they are looking to move from CT, but they have manufacturing which will be hard to move and also they fear a move m ay impact their ability to get defense contracts because of political pushback. Ruger is only headquartered there with their guns behing made elsewhere in the US. Be interesting to see if either make the move out of CT now.

Yeah, Colt has been planning on a move to Florida for a few years, this is just the last straw. The only thing obama's gun control push has accomplished on the national level is turning the millions of gun owners into pissed-off activists that are gung ho about not sending another dollar of potential tax revenue to the states hostile to gun rights (NY,CO,CT). Colt is just trying to protect their brand name. It's a good strategy on gun people's part, "putting your money where your mouth is" is a lot more effective form of protest than standing on street corners with dopey signs. >;p

He probably shouldn't have said that given his position, but is he wrong? I don't know. I can see how the media portrayal of our country would scare young people overseas.

less foreign nationals trained to take our high tech jobs? what's the loss, the fact that they'd have to fix our education system, by actually funding it instead of defunding it to privitize it?

No doubt. I'm just saying, if you only had the media portrayal I can understand how some people overseas might get the wrong idea about life over here. I read that article though and they go into the real reasons behind the student drop which makes Kerry look really dumb. And yeah, the Secretary of State shouldn't get involved in domestic politics bullshit. fgt.

Foreigners are just idiots when it comes to how this country is viewed. My psychology teacher told us how back in the 70s when she was in Germany a random person in a supermarket start bitching at her about Nixon.

Now that Kerry is Secretary of State, I'm kind of glad he wasn't elected president. The guy is just not intimidating. I think Hillary was probably a much scarier Secretary of State than Kerry will be.

Thats because Hillary has bigger balls than most of the politicians in Washington. She and her husband aren't my favorites, but nonetheless..

I have no interest in going to the US, for many reasons, but the amount of guns there is up there on the list. The article specifically mentions Japan, and he's right, many young Japanese consider the US to be a country of guns, violence and racists. You can thank 8 years of Bush and fox news for that.

Intellectually, I know that the amount of guns is not a threat, but why take the risk?

No, I'm going to blame typical human ignorance and feel fine about doing so. (This is akin to some hicks I know not wanting to go to Japan because every guy over there is a serial rapist)
