Wouldn't that control both outlets though?

There is a switch nearby that doesn't go with any ceiling lights. I'll give it a try.

Yep, that works, Big Lanx got it.

Weird that only half the outlet is connected to that switch and not the other half.
This is done pretty often, though usually I think they will flip those outlets upside-down so they're identifiable, but yeah, it's usually the top outlet on it.

If you break off these tabs on both sides then you can wire each plug separately.

Outlets on light switches is something I hate. It was very popular in the 50-70s. They had some strange hate for overhead lighting, and so everything was on floor lamps. Heck, my 70s house had all kinds of outlets in the floor so you could plug your lamps in around your sofa and love seat without having to cover extension chords with carpets. I've gone through every room in my house and added overhead lighting, and all the outlets are not switched any more. It's a pain in the ass to do. The cool thing is I was able to ensure that no outlets and overhead lights are on the same breaker. If the lamp goes out, you can plug one in if needed. And due to the efficiency of LED lamps, I have all my main level lighting on one breaker, all the second story lighting on another, and the basement on a third. I have also just completed a task I'm rather proud of. Every breaker # is written on the back side of the outlet cover so if I ever need to fix something I don't have to go searching for the breaker. I also have it all mapped out on a sheet next to the breaker box. I put in a new breaker box, it's very nearly full, even though it has 42 slots. I have subpanels in my outbuildings. Every box is pristine, not a wire out of place. I'm rather proud of the electric work I've done considering the rats nest it was when I got here.
