Got one of the countertop nugget ice machines (GE Profile Opal 2) just over two years ago. I was skeptical since the reviews on reliability weren't great, but it's been pretty great though (so far). If/when it dies, we'll probably get another.

No idea how to find them these days, but could keep an eye out for restaurant auctions to find an older "professional" grade chest type ice maker that are made to be worked on (or at least they used to be). Especially if you have a family in sports or that just love their ice. Wouldn't be surprised if there are videos on YouTube and/or people talking on Reddit about repair and various issues for each make/model too.

I looked into that for our fridge and read some other people’s posts in Facebook group about going down the same route. Short version is that companies won’t warranty or service commercial appliances installed in residential settings. That’s as far as I investigated and people could just be lying, but I dropped it and moved forward.

Acknowledging that you were talking about an old used one and doing self maintenance which does sound fun and maybe we could do something like in the garage or shop, but not for primary. Sounds fun.

Dont ever buy an LG anything that is not a TV or a monitor. There is still a class action lawsuit pending for these compressors, and best of alll they still use them in their fridges, lol. It was literally throwing $3500 to garbage.

I had an LG fridge that lasted about 20 years. Actually more like 22. It had water and ice in the door. It was actually pretty awesome. I got another one a few years ago. No issues.

So either you were one of the lucky ones or I was one of the unlucky ones. Speaking to the dude I called for the service and how much it would cost to fix it after they sent me the compressor, I asked the dude which brand of fridge he would buy. He told me to buy a Whirlpool. And thats what I did. He said although they are all shitty these days, its one of the brands that he gets the least calls for.
