Got one of the countertop nugget ice machines (GE Profile Opal 2) just over two years ago. I was skeptical since the reviews on reliability weren't great, but it's been pretty great though (so far). If/when it dies, we'll probably get another.

I looked into that for our fridge and read some other people’s posts in Facebook group about going down the same route. Short version is that companies won’t warranty or service commercial appliances installed in residential settings. That’s as far as I investigated and people could just be lying, but I dropped it and moved forward.
Acknowledging that you were talking about an old used one and doing self maintenance which does sound fun and maybe we could do something like in the garage or shop, but not for primary. Sounds fun.

I had an LG fridge that lasted about 20 years. Actually more like 22. It had water and ice in the door. It was actually pretty awesome. I got another one a few years ago. No issues.

So either you were one of the lucky ones or I was one of the unlucky ones. Speaking to the dude I called for the service and how much it would cost to fix it after they sent me the compressor, I asked the dude which brand of fridge he would buy. He told me to buy a Whirlpool. And thats what I did. He said although they are all shitty these days, its one of the brands that he gets the least calls for.

Our recent purchase was a low cost Frigidaire and it's been solid so far. I still remember seeing the light in the salesperson's eyes when we were shopping. We walked in and started looking, we had already done a lot of online research, had a pretty solid idea what we wanted. Salesperson came over all smiles, asked us what we were looking for, then as he started to lead us towards the other end of the fridge section I added :
"Nothing with a screen, nothing that connects to the internet, no proprietary air or water filters, not a French door model."
Then sadness took over his eyes.... and he showed us to essentially the three least expensive things they had on the floor. I even saw a new trick which is the companies are putting RFID readers next to the water filters, and unless your water filter has an RFID it recognizes as that manufacturer's make, it won't accept the filter, and fuck that noise....

I wouldn't mind one of those...
I will add, that out on our patio we have our "patio fridge". It's literally a 97 Kenmore that laughs at the idea of time passing. I am convinced it will outlive both my wife and myself.... I think I have mentioned this monolith to reliability in some other threads.

do you know if that is still r12, cuz that is right around when they switched to r134a, i'm positive old fridges (and ac units) last forever b/c they used good ol r12
when my mom went to sell the ny home, we still had the old fridge that came w/ the house, some 70s fridge
in the basement, still running
and she sold it w/ a 90s fridge (that was our main fridge)
i think it was a whirlpool
the only problem w/ the 70s one in the basement was the yearly defrost

Salesperson was an idiot then or it was a appliance store for poors bc he could have just said “yes sir step right over here to our Subzero, Thermador, Fisher and Paykel, Liebherr, etc that has just what you’re asking for. Oh; you also don’t want to pay $13k for a refrigerator… that’s different. Now I’m sad.”

My mom gave me her old Frigidaire fridge shortly after I got out of the Army in 2006. That was one of their first remodels for their Kitchen where they switched over to that stupid big sized type of fridges where they were able to swap out the panels to make it look like the cabinets for some god awful reason. They already had it a few years before I went in, so I'm guessing its a late 90's at its earliest. That thing is now down in my docks storage room keeping beer cold and making ice. Championing through the elements and laughing in their face. I'm using Zline stuff now and its "pretty" but as far as I can tell, theyre just glorified GE appliances.
