I fire up Minecraft once or twice a year, so I bought this because I've bought plenty of other $20 games that I've never played yet, so why not?

It is pretty much just unmodded Minecraft with a texture pack and some other minor changes. I like it, but I haven't played unmodded Minecraft in over a decade so it doesn't really thrill me a ton yet. Once they get some modpacks going I'm sure I'll be more invested. It plays very well though, for all the claims it was going to suck.

One thing that kind of annoys me is having so many different crafting benches. And the ones that require you to put a material in before seeing what the bench can make, I'm not a fan of either. Show me everything I can make, and then let me decide if I want to go farm the resources to make it. Of course, it is possible that in my hour or so of play I missed something basic that would allow me to do that, but I didn't immediately see it.

Still, I will probably mess around with it here and there when I'm bored of other games. It's a solid game, just a little generic until people put a lot of effort into mods, same as Minecraft.

I thought that as well, but I think outside of MAYBE 1 of the benches (can't remember which, Arcanists?) you can actually see what each tier unlocks. All recipes are shown and they tell you what tier of workbench they're locked too.

One thing that is smart is if you upgrade a bench to tier 3 and want to move it, if you destroy it it goes into a work 1 bench BUT EVERY single piece used to upgrade it to tier 3 comes back to you. So if you spend a bunch of chitin on some dumb shit you can just whack it back and spend it on something else instead.
