So this is the trek we're thinking of. Need to figure out where we're staying on the road trip, but I think a night or two up in Akureyri and hope the weather lines up for a good viewing of the Lights since it's very remote outside the town. Likely do the Golden Circle another day. Sounds like you can do the loop in a single day. Rest of the time we'll just party our ass of and eat fancy meals in Reykjavík.

Looks like it only adds up to about 20 hours of driving. Seeing the Northern Lights is kind of the primary objective and I have a feeling the remote eastern/northern parts of the island will be ideal for that.

O shit, i'm gonna be there from the 3rd - 11th as well, same goal. Northern lights, we booked tours of a lava tunnel and also an ice cave near Vik. I rented a 14mm f/2.8L lens to do some night time shots of the northern lights if they show up but if not i'll settle for the fact that the moon will be in a new phase so the skys should be dark as hell for some star gazing. We're crashing at the Minniborgir cottages and planning activities around that.

Ha, we're doing an ice cave tour near Jökulsárlón. Itinerary is now set in stone. Driving around the whole island. Really looking forward to this trip. I haven't been to anywhere cold for anything not skiing in so long I had to buy a bunch of cold weather clothes.

If you find yourself in the area of Laugarvatn this bread looks delicious, I plan on checking it out since it's about 14 min drive from where we're staying.

Update to the bread, I have a friend who was in Iceland the past couple of days before heading to the UK. They asked and apparently it's just standard rye (kind of expected that from the ingredients listed) and the family in this one video is like the only ones who do it. Interesting but there goes that idea

“Earlier this month a large coronal hole on the sun faced the Earth, sending solar wind hurtling towards us, leaving lucky spectators with a spine-tingling aurora borealis show," says Saevar Helgi Bragason, one of Iceland’s most renowned astronomers.

“Due to the fact the sun rotates once every 27 days or so, this means that around 27 days later it is most likely to occur again. This gives those visiting Iceland between 02-07 November a very high probability of sighting the northern lights.

Looks like we might luck out, hoping the clouds cooperate and the sun keeps farting in our general direction.

I'll be spending another 2 1/2 hours walking around my apartment trying to identify what other shit I need to stuff into my already full bags. Good thing is I don't drink much anymore so I can avoid getting cornholed on that. Too bad weed isn't legal and the laws are still really strict otherwise it'd be great to get baked out of my skull and watch the sky.

Finally home, got to see the northern lights, tour a volcanic lava tunnel (inactive), walk through a glacier that sits atop the Volcano Katla, a couple of water falls and a geyser. Fantastic trip my only gripe is the sky was cloudy all but one night there so the aurora viewing was terrible. All the more reason to go back though

Reykjavik was neat as well, the sea food was fucking amazing.

Yeah the seafood was very, very good. I was impressed with the beer too. We saw the lights twice but nothing compared to the show on a week ago. We were staying out in the middle of nowhere in Skogar and had amazing visibility from the hot tub.

Just got home a few hours ago and now I have like 200 pictures to sort through.

I didn’t do much drinking because it just makes me feel like shit in the end but of the ones I sampled it was really good. Ulfur seemed to be a favorite among the people I was with

Already pricing out a return in march and I think it’s going to happen. Will look at going for the southeast and north more than the west side of the island this time around

Probably saved you a ton of money. We really enjoy drinking (easier than saying alcoholics I guess) and even bought some booze in the duty free shop when we landed because we heard the liquor stores have dumb hours and are even more expensive. We ran out of both our bottles by the third night. I just added up my expenses. Almost $1500 on booze and food. In nine days. Ouch.

I would still undoubtedly go back again. One of the best vacations I've ever taken.

Hex ? I have a decent camera but knew nothing about how to best capture the lights until too late. After seeing how great my pics came out for the lame display on Saturday night I'm bummed I didn't know the same tactics earlier in the week. Because we really saw a spectacle last Sunday.

Alex I did however they're kind of off i.e. the foreground is kind of blurry which I wasn't going for, the lights themselves are OK though. I'm blaming jet lag because I was basically on hour 25 of no sleep. That kind of upset me since I didn't have another shot at redemption all week

But like I said all the reason to go back hah.
