Obviously there isn't a fine and they are just trying to scam more cash out of him.

Ehh I know CT and MD both require you to return plates or pay a fine if you change where the car is registered, cancel insurance, etc...

Seems like they tried to scam Onoes and ended up getting scrwwed out of money in the end.

If that's how it transpired I can of see why they might have got a shady feeling from you.
Like I said, this entire thing is one big, retarded misunderstanding. Unlikely anyone was trying to scam anyone else. Everyone involved is just a fucking moron.

I still can't figure out why there's a fine for these plates, or what they need them for. But I've never lived in a state that had some arbitrary law about plates which I still don't understand.
http://www.dmvnv.com/insurance.htm
http://www.dmvnv.com/platesurrender.htm

You must cancel your registration and surrender your license plates if:

You have dropped the vehicle liability insurance for any reason. You should surrender the plates before you cancel the insurance.
You have sold or otherwise disposed of a vehicle and will not use the plates on another vehicle within 30 days.
Your vehicle will be stored or under repairs for an extended period and you do not wish to keep the liability insurance or registration in effect.
Nevada is mandatory insurance.

Looking up the laws on license plates is hard. Even more curious is all this talk of fines when this transaction should not of taken anywhere near thirty days.

Pretty sure Eomer has it right. They're all morons. It's no wonder the local police wouldn't get involved...

She likely cancelled the insurance, or wanted to before having to renew and not having the plates fucked that up.

There definitely is no fee for this in Las Vegas, although her plates are tied to her person and not the car. I think they're getting hit with some other fine (probably tax/registration/etc) and trying to milk it out of you.

Just go through the lawyers, they are probally making up something to get money out of you (classic scam tactic). It could be legit but I'd use someone legal as a middleman from now on to stop any scams.

1. I'm still pretty confused about the plates. How is a used car transaction supposed to go down in nevada? I mean, if the plates are theirs, then what are you supposed to do when driving the used car home? Why didn't you do that? If you're supposed to keep the plates on it until you register it, then it sounds to me like you're 100% in the right here. Second part fo the question, whatever the laws are in nevada were you aware of them? Are the laws similar in your own state?

2. Why did the fine change from $600 to $350? I think worst case scenario in court would be that the judge orders you to pay the fine and her to sign the title over to you. But best case scenario is that they get to pay your legal fees too. Don't forget to tack that onto the bill. Oh and while you're piling it on, don't forget the $1300 you had to pay for a second car because this one was unusable, and I believe you mentioned that the one they sold you needed some repairs.

3. When the titlemax guy had the plates and she was texting you, you should have texted the boyfriend and mentioned that he should think really hard whether he wanted his bail revoked over this pitiful attempt at theft by deception.

4. I absolutely do not understand why everyone is claiming this is a civil matter and not criminal. True, criminal charges can't force them to sign the title over, but, at the point that they threatened to report the car stolen, IMO it became criminal. This is clearly both a criminal matter and civil matter.

5. Have you checked to see if they reported it stolen?

6. The only reason I suspect they might have been trying to pull a scam is how easily she went down on price. In your original story, you made it seem like she accepted your lower offers without batting an eye, definitely without giving you a counter. True, she might just really suck at negotiating, but that's also something a scammer will do. So if this was a scam, the only possible scam is that they are now trying to sell the car again, this time with just the title. Have you checked craigslist to see if that's going on? Or alternatively, maybe they are trying to get another loan on it from another titlemax type place. Do those places have to see the actual car, or can they make the loan if the title is clean?

And about the $3,300 for getting the airbag light taken care of, it really is not that unrealistic and it is unlikely you will find anyone to do the job cheaper. I'm not sure what all they need when they say they need to change ALL the computers, but I assume they mean at least the ocm and srs module. The ocm module more than likely only come as part of the passenger seat cushion so that'll likely run you $600-1200 alone just for the cost of the part. The srs module is another $3-400 computer. Obviously these parts aren't available aftermarket and you can't get them from a salvage yard because once they are programmed to a vehicle it can not be programmed to another. These new parts will have to be programmed with either a Ford factory licensed computer (thus you have to bring it to a ford dealership) or if your lucky it may be possible with an aftermarket computer, but it would be one of the $10,000 dollar varieties (so you'd have to bring it to a real auto repair shop) not the $100-500 varieties.

I assume its not still under factory warranty because if so then it wouldn't be an issue, so your only options are to pay the $3300 (or close to) or have a car without working airbags. If it is a common problem for that model you can hope there is a recall for it down the road so they will do it for free. I say close to, because if you did decide to have the car fixed if you have another ford dealership in your area you can call them and tell them what you were quoted and they'll likely be glad to do the job for $3000.

Oh yeah, I forgot it was airbags. I hate the fuckers, I wouldn't fix them if I didn't have to. I pull the airbag relay on my truck and only put it in when it's time to get inspected. But just the same, tack it onto the bill. Don't they have a legal requirement to tell you about major defects like that?

They think you were driving the car on their insurance and that puts them in a vulnerable position.

No one is scamming anyone, both parties are too impatient and stupid to complete the transaction. In my jurisdiction you can not cancel the insurance without returning the plates.

That girl also showed up to the site later (she was a friend of a friend of a friend of a poster), and she seemed pretty decent, and then she left before we could ask to see her boobies. Because really the barrier to entry into messageboard communities is sorta high.

I'd drive to their house in the middle of the night in the Jurassic Park truck and spray paint "life will find a way" on their garage door

But seriously, just in case the shit hits the fan I highly, highly recommend deleting at least one of your posts in this thread. The one where someone suggested right afterward that you delete it.

I bought a used shitbox earlier this year, got the title, got it on my insurance, left the car parked in the guys neighborhood, went to DMV the next morning got my own plates, took off the old plates and tossed them behind the fence of the guys townhouse like he asked me to, and had someone drive the shitbox home.

But anyway, OP bought a car, not plates. The stripper girl should have not have let him drive the car away with her plates. It's her own fault about the plates and that's on her. Not giving title is on her as well.
