I mean, to be completely fair, he did say that anyone who likes robots punching each other won't like this film. Which is a little douchy.

People can like filet mignon AND Chinese buffets at the same time for different reasons.

This was an OK movie (6.5/10 for me), but I feel it missed a big opportunity to be an amazing movie by not really having an overarching conflict. The primary one (which I do not want to disclose other than saying the movie's title is a red herring), is readily identified and you get beat over the head with it throughout the movie. Also, I would have liked to see a least a layer of subtext or misdirection as in the end, it felt it a bit too repetitive and predictable. Not terrible, though more suspense than horror IMO.

This reads like "Art school faggots will love this. People who actually enjoy watching movies will not."

I mean I could be wrong, but that is exactly how that is interpreted by non-art school kids.

Don't get me wrong, it might be a really enjoyable movie. But those are major warning signs to people who actually enjoy movies vs. those who see them as academic endeavors.

Yeah, I read it as a snobby "smart, sophisticated people like me will like it and only stupid people who are too dumb to get it won't"

Hate people like that

Went and saw this today, and really was expecting something very similar to The Witch... Honestly, didn't love it. Decent 6.5/10 kind of movie. Solid atmosphere, good acting, but I guess I was expecting something extra, or "more". Very much a basic, tense cabin fever thriller.

Not that the movie was bad, but there was nothing special. Can't say I recommend it. I loved the The Witch, and I'm all about the Art House/Indie horror films, but yeah. Agree with just about everything Scoresby Scoresby said.

Think that sums up my thoughts perfectly. The Witch was pretty amazing, and easily one of the best horror films I've seen in years. I was excited for this flick, and while the production was spot on, it just left me wanting something more. I don't know, maybe just a hint of something supernatural would have been enough, or a little more info about the plague. Wouldn't have to be anything major, but just enough to get you speculating, and pushing that whole fear of the unknown angle.

For people that have seen the movie.

I was expecting the "something extra" to be the grandfather coming back to life and fucking with the house. Just that hint of supernatural, sadly that never came around. His dream sequences were fucked up, was hoping that was more than just nightmares.

bump, cause this is on Netflix now.
Due to the big time gap, I basically went into this blind. I remember it being talked about, but yeah, not super memorable.

thoughts
well acted and shot.. but, left wanting. I pulled up the red letter media on it, and I think Jay hit it on the head. Misery porn. just all depressing, with no clear message. What was the point of the visions? What were the stakes? We dont know if the were being over-reactive with their paranoia, if we don't know whats going on. Other then, in the end, the paranoia was justified? They DID all get infected and die when the door was opened? so back to, whats the message? paranoia is good, and just have better quarantine procedures?
who even opened the door? was it the kid?
The people didnt really act like people, in the sense, in order to keep everything mysterious from the audience, the people in the movie NEVER talk about whats going on. new people get invited in. and they never discuss the state of the world. what they do or don't know about the infection, etc..

It was ok? Didnt understand the forced tension at the end. They wanted to leave, why was it a struggle?

It Comes at Night, aside from the marketing and title giving you an impression that things come at night (they don't) is alright but it's got this annoying gimmick baked in to the story that really held it back for me.

The film doesn't come out and tell you anything. Everything is kept ambiguous. Everything. Who is lying when about what, was this person in cahoots with that, why did this happen, what did this mean, who or what did that, etc. Nothing. You will be told and you will be shown nothing. It reminded me of The Lady or the Tiger, not for the ending, but for how it's up to viewer to decide what's actually going on. I went back over some scenes with subtitles on just to see if I could tease out anything concrete and nope.

Also, it's got a subtheme of never listening to the advice of women that is almost certainly an accident.

It's still just fine as a movie but intentionally deadended mysteries (as per the director) never sit well with me. Alright, there's this big door that the trailer makes a big deal about being kept locked at night. Oh no it's been opened! Who opened it! How! Why!

Never find out.
