That's your natural aversion to change rearing its head. It is an emotion, so just double and triple check your math, get permission and encouragement from your wife, and do whatever you end up doing.

Wife has already said to do "what will make me happy". Still debating if this is in that same vein as when a woman tells you "Do whatever you want" or not. ;)

But seriously, she's got my back either way, and one reason I do dearly love her.

But yeah, it's fear/hatred of change. I was raised by my post depression era grandparents and my grandfather could never fathom why people change jobs/companies so frequently in my line of work. Probably part of that rubbing off on me.

So at this point I'm getting more and more convinced I'm just not going to be able to find another developer/engineer role. Been looking since June and only finally got a recruiter to respond to me in early this month saying they'd get me an interview setup with a company which had a position that was a good match. Dunno if it's just the holidays, but they were supposed to get back to me a couple weeks ago and won't respond anymore. Other than that, I've had literally nothing. Is there any other profession I could use some shit mid-tier coding skills at? I don't know what to do at this point. Going to be just looking for stocking/warehouse/gas station jobs for now since my unemployment is tapped, but I'm at a loss for what to do career-wise, now.

There are plenty of entry level customer service rep jobs that are wfh out there. Not great pay, but solid benefits. If your room at mom and dad's place is soundproof you could swing that easy peasy. Better than grocery store or warehouse jobs, and if it's for a company with a tech root you might be able to move up from there.

If you are able to sociopathically lie to yourself and others, you can always go into sales. Lots and lots of life insurance agencies thirsting for any warm body to try to shill their shit right now. I took a minor side quest down that path last month for a few weeks. I will never do that again, but it is something out there.
