My uncle was basically john candy. He was the funny uncle, jolly uncle, the crazy uncle and like uncle buck, was really one who cared and loved and was the best. My uncle also died young, so John Candy has an odd little spot in my heart because of that.
My favorite uncle on my mom's side is basically that. Being the oldest of all the grandkids and him having three daughters, was always kind of a surrogate son. Luckily he's still alive, but I'm dreading the call one day.

One of his favorite movies is The Great Outdoors which I'm pretty sure I saw for the first time when I was up in Wisconsin visiting him and the rest of his family.

Candy was in far more of my favorite movies. Not that Home Alone is a big part, but shit, I watch that and Planes once a year, every year. And I'll watch Summer Rental, Great Outdoors, Stripes, and Uncle Buck basically any time they're on.

Tommy Boy is the only movie I'll regularly catch from Farley. I feel like the bulk of his work was on SNL.

If you lived in Canada or within antenna range of Canada in the US but could get SCTV you knew and loved John Candy. My grandfather was a huge fan and loved watching Uncle Buck and the Great Outdoors with me.

I forgot Tim Thommerson was in that movie, another legend, Trancers, Dollman, and mother fucking Uncommon Valor, one of the greatest movies ever.

I worked at the lumber yard that supplied some of the wood for the cabin in "Great Outdoors". The blueprints were signed and framed over the entrance. H&L Lumber in Oakhurst California.

Coming out on Prime, so I will watch it for sure. I loved him in everything he did, absolute legend while still emanating an aura of kindness and fun at all times.

I was thinking earlier that I don't remember him being in a really bad movie. I wouldn't say it was all great, but none of it was bad.

Did you guys know this existed?

Harry crumb was hated on and maybe Cool Runnings but I still loved or enjoyed them. As a kid I remember Farley trying to replace his shoes but they were way different types of humor

John Candy was very underappreciated and most of the movies he was in were kinda low rent which is probably why. He was great but if you go back through the catalog most of those films just aren't very good to be perfectly honest.

Planes Trains and Automobiles is a great movie though and even Steve Martin actually acted for it instead of being his normal caricature personality.
