3-d printing bro.
They do use some CGI. Boxtrolls crowd scenes were like 8 puppets+copy/paste to make a crowd.

Just saw it as well. Fantastic movie with stunning visuals. Had to keep reminding myself that majority of this is stop motion. Action sequences are fluid and look great.

Hands down the best movie I've seen all year. The animation and music are gorgeous, the story is simple but very moving. The voice acting was spot on. Go see this movie if you haven't. It's beautiful all around.

I took my daughter to it after school today. We actually just got home. It was a pretty good movie, and the stop-motion animation was fantastic. My daughter is easily frightened, and said that she was scared of the witch every time they appeared. I had to "force" her to sit through the movie, but now that she's seen it, she's glad that I did.
