Lenovo's are good, but I think the Asus is more bang for your buck if you are going extreme gamer desktop replacement

I'm going to buy a new gaming laptop in the next 1 - 2 months and I'm curious if anyone has recommendations. I'm buying it to replace my current Asus G-something-or-other that I bought 4 years ago. Despite being 4 years old it still runs like a beast and has survived trips to several countries. Because of this, I'm leaning towards getting another of the Asus G series and I'm happy to see people in this thread recommending them. Here's the one I'm looking at:

I'd like to keep the purchase price below $1,000 so the above laptop seems to fit the bill. I'm just curious if anyone else has other recommendations (for example, one of the Lenovo Y series that I've seen mentioned a few times). I'm not too worried about size/weight because it will mostly just sit on my desk with occasional moving to other rooms.

Get the 17"

I would wait and see how the new Haswell chips turn out. This is supposed to be the generation where Intels integrated graphics are on par or better than the mid tier dedicated chipsets.

I use a Sager NP9170. Hard to beat Sager for high-end features at a reasonable price. I have been very happy with mine.

right now newegg has the Lenovo y500 for 869 which seems like an insanely great deal

If you're like me and need the absolute most portable machine, the asus g46vw is I believe the smallest laptop there is with a gtx660m in it - I got mine for 869 at bestbuy, but the fucker went on sale the next week for 799 -

Shitty screen, and not as powerful as the y500 but you cant get something so beastly in any smaller of a footprint.

oh and another comparison worth making with the y500 - most games work out ok with the y500's sli setup, which puts its performance well above the 660m, but for games that don't support the sli or have a problem supporting it, the 660m will handily trounce the 650.
And from a design point of view, the g46 has the ROG benefits, with the exhaust pointed in the back, which is pretty awesome for longtime gaming - the y500 will typically melt your mousehand. My asus also runs pretty low - temp even in long gaming sessions, with pretty crap ventilation (its hidden in a cabinet) - the y500 has some serious heating issues. I think it can be pretty safely overclocked, tho I haven't myself.

Another problem with the asus tho is accessing the interior - you cant easily swap out components so be ready to take it apart for something as simple as swapping out the 5400 rpm drive for an ssd.

the new Razer blade 14inch specs were previewed recently, its expensive (1799 with the 256 ssd). you're probably better off going with the G73 (or G53) if you want a desktop replacement and this definitely ranks up there with alienware boutique but i like it overall. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come --

Not only did it run circles around most of the games we tested (more on that below), but it also survived Engadget's standard battery test for a staggering four and a half hours -- by far the longest-lasting gaming rig of its size that we've ever tested. In a category where two hours is considered a good showing, more than four is simply unprecedented. Intel's latest chipset is probably the reason, making good on its promise to sip less wattage than Ivy Bridge. If Haswell can do this with a gaming laptop, we can't wait to see how far it'll stretch out a longevity-focused Ultrabook.

Haswell is getting a lot of flack for not being much faster or able to oc more than SB or IB but that's not really the point of it. The lower power consumption and increased battery life is awesome. We should see some really cool ultra books and full win 8 tablets this year. Should be sweet.

Pretty much. It's not a great cpu for desktops, but it's quite amazing for mobile computing.

Assuming Intel delivers on their claims..



And Apple fixes the awful screen retention issues in the current Retina MBP, I'll probably be picking up a Haswell Retina MBP sometime soon.

It's actually better than I expected. Sure, it still lags behind Nvidia's solutions, but it also uses half as much power as the dedicated Geforce mobile cards. Pretty impressive stuff.

Looks to me as though the fastest Hasell GPU is slower than a GT650m in most cases. That would mean that if you buy the next model of rMBP, you'll get worse gaming performance. I've been looking forward to the next rMBP, but I worry about that performance. I can only hope that it'll help the UI lag the current model has. Sure, Haswell will give better battery life, but for me, that's a smaller concern.

I'd be really surprised if they ditched the Nvidia GPU with this generation of Macbooks, to be honest. I know they'll do it eventually, but I don't think it'll happen with Haswell. Assuming they do keep the Nvidia GPUs, it should be possible to force the rMBP to use the IGP to benefit from Haswell's improved battery life (http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/07...gfxcardstatus/).

RE: The UI lag. Again, I'd be really surprised if they haven't fixed it in osx 10.9.

Those Iris Pro 5200 benchmarks are pretty amazing for what it is. Having a ultrabook/tablet that can at least do passable HD gaming without sacrificing battery life is going to be awesome.

I've had my Asus UX32VD ultrabook for a little over a month now. It's a great machine, but I've decided to go back to a Macbook. So, if anyone is interested, I'm selling the Asus. So I'm looking into ultrabook convertibles for school. Very little (if any) gaming will be done on it. Any suggestions on where I should start looking?

I'm really looking for a portable that can handle both hand-written notes (like for calculus) and typing. So if there's also a tablet I should be looking at instead, point me in that direction.

Sadly, no Retina MBPs at Apple's WWDC event (unless they show them off at the last second, anyway). They did announce new Macbook Airs, though, and they claim that the combination of Haswell and optimisations in the new OSX release boosts battery life by as much as 80%, which is pretty damn impressive if true. They also dropped the price of the new Macbook Airs, which is rather surprising.

It also looks like the new OSX version, 'Mavericks', will fix the Retina lag. On their 'advanced technologies' slide, they showed 'GPU resolution scaling', or something like that, which should fix that problem once and for all. They demoed all their stuff on a Retina MBP, too, and it all looked really smooth.

I guess we'll see updated Haswell Retina MBPs when OSX Mavericks launches in a few months time.
