Finally had a chance to do it, god damned raid schedules and having kids:

Started a new char (putrid child) with original density:

72% off RN, highly recommended

On top of that, another co-op person can play through the entire game with you (and keep their progress if they decide to buy) for free if you give them your friend code

It was fun for the first few hours, but not nearly as fun as Remnant or From Software games. The level layout design is not the best and there's weird bunching of mini bosses with hordes of mobs. It's unfairly balanced imo. But, no regrets getting it for $20 on Steam. Ran well on handheld.

I just finished this game. It is fun and has a lot of potential it is just hard to give it a rave review in a world where FromSoft exists. I liked their magic system, and their various currencies for different items. The Umbral thing felt under used/poorly executed, basically there was no point to run around in the overworld other than to avoid the red reaper. I probably played +90% of the game in Umbral because all the puzzles (if you want to call them that) were solved in Umbral. I wish they would have made some of the puzzles only solvable in the overworld.

I started a Preacher and pumped points in to radiant, ended up getting some badass two hander Bloody Agony and just steam rolled with that. Got some other weapons I was curious about, but just not curious enough to replay the whole thing. If Elden Ring is a 10/10 this is a 6.5/10, but has the potential to be a 9/10 if they make a LOTF 2 (or 3 depending at how you look at it).

Yeah I never did finish it, though I enjoyed it. I liked the systems but felt like it was 80% of the way there

Pre-2.0 patch, it was a whole different beast. Back then, staying in Umbral too long was straight-up dangerous. Enemy density was way higher, ambushes were common, and the longer you stayed, the worse it got. The Red Reaper wasn’t just a jump scare — it was a real threat that forced you to either push forward quickly or bail out. The counter to trigger his arrival built up much faster too, so you couldn’t just linger around without consequence. You had to constantly manage risk vs. reward, and that tension gave Umbral its identity.

Post-2.0, though? The balance is gone. Umbral’s been nerfed into a tame, low-threat version of what it was. Now you can stay there the majority of the time because there’s barely any resistance, which completely undermines what made it compelling in the first place.

So yeah — your experience makes total sense based on the current patch.

That makes a ton of sense, they probably need to find that happy medium. I will be curious to see what their next game is like, I feel like there is a lot of potential.

I suggested they do a core difficulty with achievements or cosmetic rewards and a mode for normies

Any idea if PS4 talks to PS5? I have a friend who only has a PS4, but he'd be up for co-oping this with me for free if they crossplay.

At launch in 2023, it was a mess — buggy, unstable, and slightly unbalanced. But by the time Patch 1.5 dropped, it actually hit a really solid balance. Performance was much better, Umbral was still dangerous, and there was real tension from enemy density and the Reaper timer.

But with 2.0, it feels like they went all-in on making the game way more casual to attract a broader player base — probably to recover some of the rocky launch losses. Enemy density got nerfed hard, many bosses now feel more like minibosses, and enemy health and damage were reduced overall. On top of that, enemies drop more vigor early in the game, making players stronger faster. Overall, it just lost that edge it used to have. It’s too safe now. And with the follow-up game already on the horizon, I doubt they’ll bother fine-tuning it back toward the challenging side.
