I don't think even a delay is gonna help them..

They need to basically rebuild the game from the ground up, they realized with the test that the game will fail as just a flat extraction shooter(No shit, Bungie.), that was before the art stuff also.

I agree. It's just an uninspired game at its core in its current state that is missing a lot of core features that people usually enjoy in extract shooters, like prox voice chat and viable route to play solo. Assuming Arc Raiders doesn't completely shit the bed when it comes out (rumor is something will happen 6/6 based on a recent Steam file update, which is same date as Summer Games show), that game is going to siphon away most of the prospective population that would have potentially considered Marathon.

They were told this shit back when they first announced this game back like a year or two ago. They had internal tests that didnt go so well. I guess they invited some "extraction" players and asked them for feedback. And from the rumors, it was an overwhelming "meh".

They should have stuck to Destiny franchise. Its what people want and what pays their bills. Instead of concentrating on Destiny 2, and making it the best MMO shooter they could, and working on the next installment, which would have made them a fucking mint again, they chose to get into something they have no fucking clue about and which is a niche genre anyway. Total mismanagement of the company by a few that should not lead a muti billion dollar company like this.

They fucked over Destiny players by generic crap for years. Boring ass seasonal content that never changed for years. PvP side of things got neglected for fucking YEARS. But still they had those people coming back every time a major expansion hit. Even though some of them were total shit. They DO have a core audience and they have droves of people wanting to come back IF there is some good shit to come back to. Plus I still hear that their new player experience is shit, so they cannot even attract new people because its a convoluted mess to get into, content wise and what shit to buy, because they make it hard for a reason so they siphon more money from people by obfuscating the content in the stores.

Destiny 3 would have been the perfect game to bring at about this time. Another hard reset, back to square one with their 10 yrs of experience in what works and what doesn't.

If the goal of leadership is truly just get to 2026 and have the stocks vest then bolt, they are right on target. Seems blatantly clear they don't really care about Marathon being a success

Japanese game companies make shitty decisions all the time. SquareEnix dumped all the western studios it had acquired after a string of flops, but even domestically they make bad decisions. For example, they've siphoned away a lot of the money FF14 pulled in to shore up underperforming titles.

All they had to do was end Destiny, and have Marathon actually BE the Marathon everyone remembers, just with their big budget and usually good art team.

they will release the game in early June 2026. Week or two after GTA, so they can blame GTA for the poor sales numbers. Then forget about it and write the cost off on taxes

All of this.

Asmon made a great point talking about today; games take too long to make and these companies are too big and too insulated from gamers and the audience to be successful. Sure, there is all the DEI/ESG/internal activist influence that drives these projects into the weeds, i.e. Concord and Veilguard, but also they are just too bloated to get them out in a timely enough fashion to strike when the zeitgeist is hot. Too much bloat, too many layers, too many meetings, not enough connections with the audience or passion for the project rather than passion for activism.

That's why these smaller AA projects are killing it while AAAA/AAA big company bloatware are consistently failing.

Yeah, it seems like all of these AAA studios lost their way and their good people too. When was the last AAA game that was truly groundbreaking and innovative? I cant really think of one. They are all copies of a copy now. They cant innovate anymore. They are just too large and decisions are not made by devs but committee. Its like a small studio makes a good game, then they get bought out by the big publishers like EA or whatever, and they churn out nothing but shit from that point on. All the good people end up leaving to form the next indie studio and the cycle continues.

From what I understand about the buy out from Sony,

There are milestones/numbers they have to pull in before the stock becomes vested, if these numbers are not reached within the time frame given, Sony can sit there and trash can the whole board and tell Bungie to get bent.

It's the exact same thing that happens in film - you get some guy who makes a low budget independent film, but it is really creative or has great writing or great camera work because it is a work of passion. But when they get picked up by a big studio to make some larger budget film, they don't always succeed. Sometimes they do, but many times they fail to replicate that earlier success because they have studio heads or producers meddling every step of the way.

Nothing and I mean nothing is going to save this game. Its failure is simply a question of when, not if.
