I’ve seen some people post painted stuff in the past, and there’s a small derail in the Kickstarter about starting the hobby. Figured we could make a thread dedicated to it. I’ll post some equipment recommendations later. Here’s a few pics of things I’ve painted over the past couple years.

I suggest going with either the synthetic or natural hair set from Creature Caster, they are great brushes and the price is low for how good they are imo. Set Options

I'd suggest buying a cheap set of brushes as well for things like shading which doesnt need nice brushes and dry brushing which ruins brushes. After trying several brands, I buy these from Amazon Cheap brushes

No matter which brushes you end up going with, 100% buy the brush cleaner from Creature Caster. This is another reason i recommend buying brushes from them too, save on shipping from multiple places. This brush clener blows Master's (what a lot of people use) away. It's not even close, I gave my master's soap away to my toddler son to use for his watercolor painting lol. Best Brush Soap

My LGS had a small painting workshop about a month or so ago so I decided to hop in and try to learn to paint some minis for D&D. The Dragonborn is my first mini I’ve ever painted and I’m pretty happy with him. Got some of the gloss wash on the armor so it’s nice and shiny and looks good on the table. Could use some cleanup still.

The dracolisk I can’t really figure out what to do with it. I’ve repainted it three times and have never been happy with how it looks. It’s also a bit of a pain because the model itself has a lot of areas where I can’t tell which bits end where and others begin.

The kitty I did for funsies and just painted it to look like my cat. I was really happy with her right eye but then couldn’t find the right spot on the figure to put the left one, so she’s got derp eye. She also was not impressed with her likeness.

And most recent one I did was the owl. Really liked how this one turned out, happy with the eyes and finally got some dry brushing to show up for once.

Really been enjoying the painting so far, though. I’m not great at it but hopefully will get better with some time and practice. Would love to hear any tips folks might have for a beginner. Looking at stuff others have done has blown my mind, there were some nice figures on the latest episode of Painters Guild on G&S during the show and tell and that flying creature Hateyou has up there looks fantastic.

Your stuff doesn’t look that bad to me for just starting. Your paint looks thick but that can be hard to judge in pics. If you aren’t thinning it down, that’s your first step. It will feel too thin when you’re starting, but depending on the paint using you want to thin with water anywhere from 60/40 to 40/60. You want the consistency of skim milk. Multiple thin layers looks much better in the end, the first couple layers will look like shit but by the end it looks good. It’s better to start thinner and change the consistency to thicker as you get more comfortable.

Start with dark base color, then lighten the color, and do another layer but covering a smaller area, to imitate light. Continue to do that until there’s a gradient from dark to light, generally with the lighter part facing upwards.

Always paint in one direction with your brush strokes, don’t paint back and forth as you’ll pool paint up in weird spots and create weird textures when you want smooth areas. The dracolich looks like it may have some of that going on.

Paint with the side of your brush as much as possible, not the tip, except when doing thin little detailed spots.

Those are beginner tips from a non expert based on how your pics look :p

Painted my favorite model from The Edge: Dawnfall. Such a cool figure.

I have all of my edge: dawnfall stuff to paint still, took about a year off, brushing up on some imperial fist and deathguard now, I'll have to put some pics up soon.

Wow, some serious mad skills in here. Props to you guys.

Hateyou Hateyou , I didn't check FoH over the weekend, so I didn't see your recommendations in time. I ended up buying a starter miniature paint set:

and brushes:

I hope those are decent. They arrived yesterday! It did not come with primer though so I need to go buy some. Otherwise I hope to try and paint my first miniature by this weekend.

Thanks also for the link for the brush soap. It's like $10 for S&H....is that something you think I can find at a local hobby store?

Also, do you have a recommendation for a primer? Is there like a specific primer for miniatures? Plastic ones? Is spray the way to go?

Very nice stuff from you guys. I'm in the process of finishing my basement and building myself a small studio area for painting and the like. I'll post some pics of how it's all coming and some of the stuff I've finally started to paint.

I've got somthing like 1000's of points or orks that I have maybe only painted one or two models of since I've been moving around the past 5 yrs and working on houses. But it's all finally coming to a close and the hobby can begin again.
