As much as I complain about my job, I actually kinda liked it, until very recently, when they decided it would just be a good idea to let all the good engineers leave, hire a bunch of literally useless 'workflow managers' instead of techs, and then start firing anyone who complains about how stupid the new situation is, which leaves even less engineers to, you know, actually fix all the things we're contractually obligated to fix for thousands of customers...

I've been told "you're really smart, you'd be good at anything you do 40+ hours a week, go find something to do and someone will pay you for it."
That seems like odd advice. This is the only full-time corporate private sector 40+ hour a week job I've ever had, I don't even know how I'd get a new one. I could go back to academia but that's fucking poop and the pay is shit.
