Early Rift was awesome, then it became a dumbed down piece of shit. GW2 was as well. I remember playing GW2 in an early beta and it was hard as hell. Just fighting 1 mob was life and death, had to cast a spell then dive out the way and cast again. Repeat while diving and only the stronger classes/characters could win like that, everyone else had to then kite it a bit to finish it off. It was edge of the seat fighting and it made everything seem more meaningful. Exploring every inch of the zone to find those little skill points and shit wasn't just something to do, it was something you desperately wanted to do because you needed every little boost you could get. And every skill and spell mattered, you had to use the right thing at the right moment.
Then a later stage of beta they changed it to be a LOT easier. And then they changed it a second time. I cancelled my order after that but it went free recently and I tried it again to see if it was as bad as I remembered, and it was even worse. I just ran around herding groups of mobs onto me and then splatting them all in 2 seconds. Fuck modern gamers.
Anyway if these games had just 1 server with a different ruleset, I would play them.
p.s. I loved the way the classes worked in Rift, really A+++. But the combat just got easier and easier as they dumbed it down, and also as mudflation kicked in. When it went free I gave it a try again and there was a new expansion so I had to grind through 10 more levels. I found a group of same level mobs and cast my 1234 routine on them. The mob died before it even reached me... So I took 0 damage, it didn't even attack me. I repeated that 50 times then uninstalled. Stuff like that is insultingly dumb. I suppose in this Skyrim world, that's what makes money. But at least if they had multiple servers like single player games have difficulty options, it could suit more people.
