See, the short was lacking in my opinion. I liked both "Piper" and "Lava" much better. This one seemed kind of thrown together. Maybe it's just because I wasn't a fan of the animation style used in the short, compared to the more realistic version used in the previous 2.

Agreed those are two very good ones. Probably better no doubt. Thought the short with Moana was just a cool concept. Pixar still have the best shorts.

Took the family to see this and really enjoyed it. The little coconut guys cracked me up the most.

Best songs: You're Welcome and Shiny (mostly because I have a mancrush on all things involving Jemaine Clement)

Anyone else quietly nerd out on how good the water animations looked?

Hey did this movie touch on how Polynesians were a savage warlike culture constantly at war with themselves trying to conquer each others islands?

For real. I thought the decapitations were a little much for a Disney movie, but I guess it's part of the history.

Polys make pretty good rugby players. I played in a conference with all poly teams (except for the one I was on) and we got slaughtered. Anyone recommend this movie?

It wasn't bad. My daughter liked it. In my opinion, it wasn't as good as Frozen, but it was decent enough. The world was gorgeous, though, so there's that. The water graphics were top notch.

Yeah, the complete radio silence screams "Get it out the door and hope people buy tickets before the reviews are out!"

It almost feels like Disney is trying to manufacture reasons for it to fail - releasing it Back-To-Back after better family options in Toy Story and Minions, and almost directly after a mediocrely received hurriedly-de-Disney+-ed sequel.

Plus the timing itself seems bad. The original only came out a decade ago - so the 5 to 10 year old girls that were the core audience are now cynical 15 to 20 year olds, and too young to have nostalgia kick in. Plus the parents are out of the "take the kids to a movie" range themselves.

The only thing I can think of is when this was greenlit, they thought The Rock was still a box office draw, and had to get it out the door before he aged out. I'm not sure any part of that sentence is accurate.
