Man, it's no wonder I never got into this. Started a shaman. Read the guild note and it gives me some vague directions. Cool, into the city I go (should also mention it's night so I can't see shit). Oh, there's a sign with landmarks. Well fuck, the vague direction I was given isn't on the sign. I'll just keep running. Eventually, after passing about 4 unhelpful directions signs, I find one that has the area I'm looking for. Follow it and find another one and...the area I'm looking for isn't on this one. What the fuck?

Start wandering around, getting lost, eventually I just randomly find the area I'm looking for. Cool. And I can see a monk guild master in the distance so I go there. I find enchanter, a summoner one and maybe one other one. Then it just goes off into some random other part of the city.

This is starting to get super frustrating. Eventually I figure out that that's some kind of hub area for guild masters and 1000 yards in the opposite direction is the building with mine. Hand in my letter, guild master doesn't say shit for 5 seconds...what is going on? Eventually he responds. 30 minutes in and I haven't accomplished shit, I don't know how to get back to an area to fight mobs, and I'm just frustrated.

I'm glad you designed a super large city, but this is terrible game design. I'd get less lost in a real city in a foreign country.
That's EQ, baby!

It's called IMMERSION! Aren't you so immersed?!

I mean yes, but in actual 1999 what did you get done in the first 30min of EQ w/o guide/prior knowledge?

As a Freeport SK… I did not find my guild for a LONG time.

I don’t understand why everyone seems to think the dungeon crawling-trinity combat gameplay of EverQuest that we all enjoyed inherently has to come with systems that are as fun as being an Iksar gynecologist.

Not to only complain, but holy shit the "only sell items to certain vendors" system is also AIDS. It'd be one thing if the vendors were actually easy to find, but it seems like they're hidden in a sea of empty buildings. Like I've got a bunch of fire beetle parts that no one wants. And with like 5 inventory slots, that blows donkey dick.

The skills also seem intentionally confusing. Like I bought a first aid book that says "learn bind wound." Uh...okay. Like with this note? It doesn't seem like it. I figure it must mean at the trainer, so I put 1 point into bind wound. Neat, where the fuck is the skill then? I have no idea. Doesn't matter anyway cause I can't afford a fucking bandage anyway cause I'd need to spend 5 hours running around getting enough money for one. Much less a backpack to put them in.

Maybe everyone is right this game isn't for me. It seems to only be for masochists. Adrullan seems to be taking the Everquest formula but making a game that's not retarded on purpose to frustrate you.

There’s a map of the city on the wiki thankfully.

I do wish simple zone layout & POI maps existed in game. Not a radar style mini map thing, just the equivalent of your character holding a paper map. It’d save me from minimizing or running a second screen. But pretty sure they’ve said firm no to that for reasons.

Holy shit, thanks. That's helpful. I saw a whole long convo on the Discord the other day about why not having maps in games now is retarded. Basically everyone is going to look one up anyway, so why waste time?

No problem.

I made a long winded post the other day about how I liked the vendor system because it made me more familiar with the city than I ever was with the likes of Freeport or Qeynos, despite having spent many times as many hours in the EverQuest cities. However, the more I thought about it, this is also true of Stormwind. I could navigate that city blindfolded to this day.

So yes, MnM achieves this familiarity with searching for a vendor who is willing to buy your Withered Ashira Yoni. However, WoW did this with a really engaging and rewarding quest loop that keeps you in the city for a few of your early levels before compelling you to really set out on your adventure. While I never appreciated the exclamation-point quest system in WoW, MnM could easily give you a tour of the city initiated by your first contact with your guild master. I'd argue those early quests should reward enough xp to get you to level 3, before redirecting you to your combat adventures outside the city gates.

The game doesn't have to hit you over the head with things either, so it doesn't feel like 'hand-holding'. For example, perhaps your guildmaster directs you to purchase an item from a general vendor, forcing you to scroll that vendor's inventory. An astute player will notice a lantern and oil on that vendor that may come in handy later. Maybe another quest sends you to the city walls, where a guard discusses the reports from the green glowing castle in the distance. Stuff like that.

I dunno. I'm really not jacked on the newbie experience so far, but it's very early. We'll see if they course correct on their own. Most of the suggestions on channels they manage are effusive praise, or things like "MAYBE A SHAMAN WHO WORSHIPS THE MOON GOD COULD HAVE DIFFERENT SPELLS DEPENDING ON THE PHASE OF THE MOON".

The fact that 99% of the complaints are about the same 3-4 gameplay elements tells me that the game’s development is going pretty well.

While I get the pain points. EQ remains one of my most favorite games. I had three false starts in the Dark Souls series out of UTTER FRUSTRATION due to its "retarded" design. But for some reason it stuck with me and now I love Dark Souls games now that I understand their foundational elements.

That being said. I appreciate games that reward game knowledge in this way. But it's also retarded when you get your first taste. I can navigate through Lower Guk and SolB blindfolded to this day. As well as Orgrimmar.

I 100% support player made maps like this. Because the thing is. You only need them if you don't go to that area often or simply didn't want to explore it.

To this day I don't know much about the more obscure dungeons like Splitpaw. But I knew about cool stuff like the banker in Runnyeye and the town at the bottom of Crystal Keep even though both were useless overall. If everything is built to maximum efficiency then nothing is really interesting.

Well another one is I got a medium quality pelt or some shit, and it said I could process it at a tannery it on the description. Okay, cool. Luckily I had you map which labels it tannery, otherwise I'd never have found that fucking place and would've just trashed it.

Even still, it wasn't until I saw someone standing next to a leatherworking station that I realized you can click on them (although it's so unresponsive right now, I'm not sure if it's left or right as I just click everything until it opens). Ran back to the tannery one and was like, oh, this actually can be clicked (after clicking 5 different items around there).

Failed, whatever. But I guess at least I know. Without the map though I would've said fuck it and never tried.

Did the starter rogue quest got a dagger you wouldn’t see until level 25+ in EQ at launch. Then continued it and got a grappling hook…turns out you have to use a slash command to activate it at a wall and you climb 30 feet in a blink. I wonder if this will come
Into play in the world?
Still level 1, dont care continue the quest then crash on note removal from inventory to turn in. Happens again…and again…will try again when 1500+ players aren’t online. Or maybe just shelve it until launch.

Pro tip, ignore the west gate, head to Feather bazaar/necropolis area to level, less people, more mob density.

The next step in the quest where you have to leap across a balcony and and sneak into a gangs hideout at night is tricky. Bring a friend to kill the guy. He can also run at low health which can get nasty quick.
