you know we really should talk about all these "failed" wow clones and their hundreds of millions (and in some cases, billions) of dollars they made. how do those guys sleep at night? Those mattresses filled with money, all those supermodels stealing the blankets. must be a rough life.

we really should look to all the super successful EQ clones to light the path and show us the way. let's see.....there was......wait its coming to me....vaporware online and neverlaunch?

New zone optimization seems decent. I'm not going to say Night Harbor was buttery smooth with 700 people in the zone but it worked which is a good thing!

I honestly have no idea how long levels took back then but no way was it that quick. A bunch of us marathoned our 2 buddies characters to 50 (they were the 3rd and 4th level 50s on the server, beaten by another duo, by less than 1 hour) and it took fucking weeks (iirc almost 2 weeks) with 4 guys rotating sleeping/grinding 24/7, i literally only participated 1 day when I went over to see wtf they were doing and why they hadn't wanted to hangout and play D&D. They had both been beta testers and knew exactly where to go/ideal path to level, though one of them still went ogre and had a huge exp penalty, but the next lvl 50 after him was like a week later so it wasn't even close.

its how i even learned what everquest was and picked up the game a week or so later, then I learned I had to get a 2nd phone line installed. my path to 50 took considerably longer since I played a rogue and spent probably 75% of my time online LFG.

Randomly I seem to recall when Furor's ogre warrior was banned in classic, he rolled the namesake human with the xp bonus, Nagafen teeth and FoH hardcore power leveling him up to 50. IIRC it was a little over 7 days played.

It's hard to really assess apples to apples though. Like Lower guk when I was hitting 50 was still kind of reasonable. But a few weeks later it was 130 or so in the zone nightly. So 7 days played in that environment is probably reflecting super mob shortages or weird routes.

They may both have been, I don't remember.

He has Kalaran the rogue who was I think the first true 50 behind some druid who was cheating. And then Kartak Dorfbruiser who was an ogre warrior in full planar and everything. I want to say was banned using kilns to transfer no drop planar stuff.

This all happened pretty early on. I think around the patch that took the Bladestorm off of Cazic. Maybe I'll wayback some details if I can find them. I used to visit the FoH website (pre-noows) a lot at that time as I was a bit ahead of the server and information on the high end game was really sparse.

edit, here - this is from noows stamped Jan 2000. you can still see Kartak below:

The ban was due transferring no drop gear, mostly planar stuff. A person in the guild, who I cannot remember, gave a few of us a app that allowed you to trade no drop gear. Kartak/Kalaran aka Furor was the only person hit for using the app.

Gave this a proper try yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I'll likely wait util more content is in before I spend more time in the game but definitely something I'm looking forward to.

The game actually has a lot of content btw, but it’s a bit sparse at the low levels , which I think is ok as you spend the least amount of time there. It’s in a far more ready state than pantheon as far as sheer content - ie dungeons, monsters , loot. I think some balancing is the most alpha aspect at the moment, as well as ui and netcode jank

Totally forgot about the warrior, thanks for that!

Man I miss Fungul, we caused some serious mischief together during the UO era.

He swung by Memphis and saw me and Titansbane one year. We all went out to dinner. Guess his dad or something worked for FedEx and he had a ton of flyer miles he could use. Super normal dude which was nice.

Jesus Christ, /look is really your friend in this game. Some of the random surprises you come across are insane, it will be one hell if an effort to get all this on a wiki

Without a doubt the coolest feature of the game with the most potential for differentiation from competitors.

i played a mud back in the day that had the best game mechanics and exploration shit by virtue of being free-hand text. it had a minimap but you'd still show up in a place and /look. then like /look phonebooth. /look phone /pickup phone. /push vending machine etc.

an outlandish amount of wacky stuff in that game. not held back by graphic development.

I rarely vouch for games. But this thing is a sleeper. It’s instantly going to filter out the 95% of gamers who are gen z or boomers that don’t have time or have been spoiled by qol mechanics of newer games. If youre the 5%, this game is a real treat. I often think about how many games seem made by template, how few things seem curated, and how design, especially environment design, is so often an afterthought in mmos these days. It was ages ago but I think I had a long rambling post about how wow started with shit like black rock depths and very quickly turned into boring linear tunnels. This game is the opposite, it’s clear everything has been designed and handcrafted with a lot of thought in mind. They obviously don’t have the resources to make gorgeous art or flesh out their designs but it doesn’t make the huge difference I thought it would because the scaffolding is there and it’s great , and works well with the mud systems they have. It’s clear a ton of time and effort went into creating this world and actually amazing such a small team did this, they really must have put insane hours in or found a way to use ai productively
