I think Pantheon did this, but I like the idea of not just reducing ability to see in the dark, but disabling the ability to click on targets if the light level is low enough. So even if you can jack your gamma up and see the model you can't click it / con it. So if you're not carrying a light or there is no ambient light you're only able to interact with stuff right next to you. Allows you to do some interesting stuff with placing lights in a spot to target in that area etc

IMO if you're going to do the system with light then you need to do more than just inconvenience people into adjusting monitor settings.

To get you to whine about it incessantly.
TomServo: "Why are games such slop nowadays? They don't make them like they used to!"

Devs in 2026: "Here you go gamers, a nostalgia slurry of slop packed with memberberries, janky mechanics from 1999, and just enough retro vibes to remind you of when you were 17 year old loser with no responsibilities."

TomServo: "OH MY GOD YES PLEASE, TAKE MY MONEY."

That seems like it would gel perfectly with the xp loss and dropping your entire corpse mechanics. I'm sure no one would rage quit when they die because they can't even target something and it kills them.

I didn't say it was a good idea in a vacuum... But if you're going to go in the the whole light matters direction something like this just makes more sense. If light is going to matter... Make it matter. Can combine with passive stat buffs/penalties.

Also, go back to WoW newb.

I haven't played WoW since like 2005. Why would I go back to a game I haven't played in over two decades?

They should check this statistic:

WB as a human is funny. I was pulling there today and just had to memorize turns heading down for mobs because I couldn’t see shit. I’m too lazy to swap a torch in and out to use so once my fire beetle eye ran out I was just winging it.

Had a bunch of fun and saw some pretty large trains come through.

Game is certainly heavy on the nostalgia shit, but I’m having a ton of fun so far(went from 7 to 12 today). The fun is all I care about. I’ll play as long as it’s fun, and will quit if/when it’s not. Pretty straightforward.

Having to fuck with computer settings to work around a mechanic is piss poor design and I cant believe anyone defends that. That just leads to tedium and/or metagaming. Should they add lockouts that require you to fuck with your pc's clock to get around? Let us altf4 to avoid death and corpse runs? Can we plugpull to bypass mob packs?

Having limited far clip plane but otherwise keeping the visuals workable is a much better solution than gamma fuckery.

I can’t be bothered as to play as a human, but the real answer is to drop torches like terraria or Minecraft or whatever. Equipping them is meh. Drop torch is a skill button for a reason. The wood economy is kinda wonk compared to the sap or whatever. But torche dropping is underused for sure.

The irony is that the people defending it are usually the same ones preaching about "immersion" and "old school challenge." Nothing says immersive fantasy world and hardcore challenge quite like pausing your adventure to open Nvidia control panel and drag a brightness slider until night magically stops existing.
