I've played an absolute fuckton of MMOs and experimented with PvP servers on most of them that offered it. However, in full transparency, I don't have a tremendous amount of experience with PvP end-game for more than a handful of MMOs.

Regardless, in my experience, open PvP in MMOs has ALWAYS been trash and (for me) it has never been a matter of "getting gud."

As it has already been said, the overwhelming majority of troglodytes drawn to open PvP are not looking for anything other than an angle to exploit, an overwhelming advantage, easy loot/advancement, or to simply grief other people. The last element has become orders of magnitude more prominent because there are a legion of windowlickers trying to get some 'funny' clip to post on Tik Tok.

Having to constantly worry about some faggot ganking you while you're already out in the world engaging with the content doesn't make the game any more fun or interesting. Dying to mobs/NPCs can be frustrating but it's never made me angry because it's simply doing what it was programmed to do, but a human making the choice to fuck you over because it was 'funny' is the kind of thing that would land me in prison if we were playing the game in the same room.

No. Not everyone goes back to the bank every time they want to change their spell loadout situationally. Only shitters do that.
It’s definitely the best thing to do on PvP considering you don’t need to change spells out in this game at all for nearly every class. Have you played this? Situational spells? What you talkin about?

You telling me you actively buy multiple spell books and accompanying spells to keep stashed in a bank, and you think that’s smarter than just keeping one spell book in the bank. If you really must have whatever situational spell you think you need then you can jus bring a 2 spell spell book with you to swap. That’s wildly dumb or you haven’t played PvP server and are just making shit up. What spells is your bar full of and what situational spells are you talking about? lol damn

Yeah every druid and wizard keeps every port memmed at all times, and all casters keep gate up. Every necro and cleric just run back to town whenever they need to IVU. All pet classes keep their summon spells up after a pet has been summoned.

Get the fuck out of here.

I've said it before, but I don't think you solve the pvp problem in MMOs without finding some way to replace the "anti-pk" role that was fairly prominent in these games early on.

A healthy server by my reckoning has three groups which I like to categorize as sheep, wolves, and sheep-dogs. No modern games have sheep-dogs so you just have the wolves run all the sheep off and kill the server. Originally this role was self selected largely for Roleplaying purposes. Well RP outside of creeps is pretty much dead so the genre needs a new way to do it. I dunno how to fix it, but I'm pretty confident that's the main problem. Gotta protect the sheep, and I think it needs to be solved at the social layer mostly. Can probably design systems to incentivise the behavior, but not sure that will work.

On MMO pvp more generally, at its best it's about resource competition and domination. It's really only fun if losing just means you have to go to the second best spot, not losing means you can't play. I personally enjoy MMO pvp because I like to need to stay on my toes when playing, it helps to keep the game fresh. Things that are irrelevant in PVE can be incredibly important in PVP. You end up with a completely different set of priorities.

Even in the old games I believe one of the biggest problems was giving the PK types a "bandit town" where they could still do normal game stuff. I love the tabletop rpg idea of a bandit town of dastardly PKers and stuff what it does in a video game is give them safe harbor. Okay you locked them out of everything else but they can still use merchants and all the other game systems, just in their stupid little town. This creates a situation where your guardrails to prevent the behavior or limit it are just not there. More recently BDO had this problem with their pirate island. The more things change the more they stay the same!

You want to PK? Suck it up bitch, you don't even get to access the bank, or any city, or even your class guildhall. You need to go to the ends of the earth to find bandit trainers just to skill up. No merchant will sell to you or buy from you outside of obscure fences in inconvenient locations. Imagine a goblin city dungeon type thing like Runnyeye, but they technically have merchants you can use if you find a PK buddy who can charm one of them. Your entire account is locked out of making non PK players on that server permanently. You can only switch to PK at level 1 to prevent people from leveling up to max, then switching to PK too. You can only trade with other PK players too. Period.

Do that then I'll let you have FFA PVP for any gay ass PKer.

A lot of energy for a mode that over 95 percent of the people playing this game will never try. I like pvp, but not in a game that isn't specifically designed for it.

Having said that, I also don't like instancing. Yes, that means some people may be upset when they lose a mob.

If you can drop things on the ground nothing to prevent them from just making another account for selling or holding. There's always some way around PvP rules.

I remember even from Warhammer people creating opposite faction accounts to kill for realm points or whatever it was.

i've played every eq there is to eq from OG (12 years old on rallos zek, quit in 2 months to go to pve), wow-era, post 75 era, tlps, eqmac, eqemu for 20 years (100s of diff servers)

none of them were as fun (except maybe 2002/3 era) as joining red99 early velious with no crew... i killed 60s as a 56 druid with a scarab helmet... i affected the outcome of a yelinak raid... yes most of the fun i had was shitting on others... but it was so fuken fun...

it was so easy to make friends on a pvp server, and im not talking about shitters you see on every night ready to lfg - it was original connection you felt back in OG eq era because at any minute they could destroy you, but they're not... reputations matters, past history matters... fuken bluebies will never understand that element... they really think pvp is 100% about griefing when the majority are the opposite

wow got it wrong imo because open pvp in alliance vs horde was just about griefing some shitter you couldnt even /say to

It’s hopeful hearing your red experience but I think kirun said it best, once people know the system the PvP falls apart.

Eve was awesome until everyone figured it. EverQuest never really had that so in retrospect it seems awesome. Just manaburning some clueless dude to get a flayed barb mask, peak 12 year old gaming. But I am pretty sure PvP vs experienced players was zone hopping shenanigans just like Eve turned into. Best time to PvP is first month or so then drop it imo.
