The biggest paradox of classic eq that I can't figure out is that the entire playerbase basically brays about how the inaccessibility and lack of features like a map are selling points, but then in-game literally everyone I meet is using map overlays, wiki spawn guides, showEQ, logging their alt accounts/guildmates for buff bots, and so on to do everything in their power to make it play like a modern day MMO with minimal inconveniences. Its like forums and genchat reality and what the players say they want and love is a completely different thing than how anyone actually ever plays the game.

If they aren't, then someone in their guild group doing the pulling/effort almost always is.

Many of the people that use those hacks probably feel they have to because "everyone else is doing it". It's the go to excuse for the type of person who rationalizes their bad behavior. Of course, some people just hack because that's what they do.

Unfortunately, many games are so hacked that it is impossible to keep up unless you use those tools. When a game gets that fucked then I just move on. I have no interest in being forced to cheat just to keep up. There are plenty of games to play and things to do in life that are more fun than being a bot.

ya the fun of these games is the initial exploration , finding that secret long quest chain or being one of the first to figure something out like a new zone access. Once that’s gone you’re just gonna have more and more people using tools to automate away their own fun. It’s whatever , the problem is unavoidable so I wouldn’t waste too much mental effort thinking of how to stop it. Big budget games can’t stop hackers either

That's odd, people from this very forum told me that we are supposed to learn everything we can in the wiki before we step foot into the game, then bitch about knowing everything and having nothing to do.

People have different motivations for playing. If you think you can impute what you find fun about a game onto everyone else you're going to have a model that isn't very predictive.

I understand that. The point I'm making is we are all chasing that feeling we felt the first time we played a great MMO, It's a high we all chase and people go out of their way to ruin it for themselves.

Third party tools and wiki sites just seem like part of the package for some people when it comes to MMOs. Like we had some sites like EQ'Lizer, Casters Realm and Everlore before EQ even left phase 4 beta. And things like EQW were popular to get around the alt-tab restrictions. Same shit for WoW when I'd have thotbot or whatever open day 1 + a ton of addons. For some reason I never cared about the RP element of MMOs compared to say something like a single player RPG where I would never look up info and go out of my way to avoid spoilers unless I'm stuck for a few hours. With MNM I already am using third party tools to help with the darkness because it hurts my eyes to look at the screen once the sun goes down. My eyes are too old to be straining them because the enviromental lighting needs more work.

My buddies and I are having a ton of fun exploring. Went to Vale of Zintar the other night and did orcs, then explored down into the cave before we portaled home. Didn’t get far in the cave, looks like it spirals downward quite a ways.

We heard about some Ashira underneath the floating black castle in VoZ and we’re going to check that out tonight.

I love that everything isn't out there on wiki, we’ve had an absolute blast just exploring and finding things.

Can’t wait to check out that undead area with the big tower in the middle of Glass Flats.

The fun of these games is asking all the ladies “A/S/L?” And then asking all the wood elf hotties if 11 year old you can stick ur peener in their butt until GM Teliesen summons you to the cat room in QCat… err… so I’ve heard

Am I the only one creeped out by the number of female ogres in this game? They genuinely creep me out for some reason, like they got that DS3 big laughing witch lady vibe goin on, or maybe Jeepers Creepers.

All the character models creep me out in this game except Humans and maybe Halfling females. This might sound weird, but I prefer the older EQ models with their low poly count and crunchy textures over M&M models with their low poly and higher res textures. They had more charm to me and fit into a classic game world better. Also they just worked better with the oldschool vibe. The M&M models look very modern in more ways than just textures, if you know what I mean.

I'm also starting to think the people I used to ignore who always said games like this were past their time and folks just don't have the patience or time to put up with this style of game anymore were right, at least with regards to myself. I always thought I could just get back into the kind of game world I used to vegetate in back in the day as my life passed by in the background, sitting in a low resolution dungeon waiting for a spawn that might drop something rare or grinding the same camp with a group for 10 hours, etc. Looking at the situation now, I honestly don't think I can do it. I have plenty of free time, well mostly, but the payoff just isn't the same. This isn't EQ, this is just some modern rendition of it. It's not the big dog cornering the online gaming market, it's just a little niche project made by volunteers with a couple thousand interested people at most. There are millions of other options when it comes to online hobbies now.

I wish I could get more excited about this game, but the last playtests were a bit of a wakeup call for me. I'll still try it out on the final free test to see if they've fixed the big issues I had during the last test though. Sorry for being a downer, just wanted to post about it.
