No shortage of balls on this team. Respect for making the right call.

They confirm in this update what I said a few weeks ago. They need 10-15k+ monthly subs to keep the bare minimum full-timers employed, in addition to volunteer labour:

If the team is 49 people, does that mean you need 50k subs in October?

No, the bulk of our team is still planning on working on the project part time when we go live.

The subset of the team that’s in a situation where we’d like to get them paid as soon as possible is still about 12 people. They’ve sacrificed a ton for us, and we’re really hoping that enough of you enjoy the game come October to help make this possible.

If we’re able to maintain more than 10-15k subscribers in a stable manner over time, we’ll roll more people onto the team.

But for most of us, we’re mostly working to see if we can make the game a reality, and hope to keep pushing it towards 1.0.

This game cannot be as 'niche' as people would have you believe.

10-15k subs is honestly pretty niche in 2026. Totally doable

Agreed. But there's a lot of mouth-breathers who think this thing will be fine with the 2500-5000 people who are currently locked in.
I dunno about EA launch, but 1.0 will see an insane amount of people at least try the game. There aren't so many MMO releases that you won't see the big content creators come in and farm some views at a minimum. Not a guarantee of success but the game will almost certainly get a lot of attention at release, for a while at least. Up to them to have it ready to keep those people.

People are still hungry for a good MMO, even crappy ones tend to see a decent pop for a while

I'd be pretty surprised if they can maintain more than 15k players beyond a year+, this game is very hardcore compared to the casual shit most mmorpgs offer now

Can you give some numbers on your definition of “insane amount of people”

No of course I can't, but I've played enough MMO releases to know that they often pull 10x more players than they keep. I expect this games release to be no different.

If they get the gameplay loop done correctly then people will get hooked. EverCrack was a real thing there for a while. But most new mmos never quite figure out the right recipe for that. It seems like over 90 percent of new mmos fall flat. Probably why they don't make them anymore.

So you think they’ll need 100-150k people to end up successful long term 🤔

This is one of the funniest things I've read in a long time.

I’m curious, is you guys’ general consensus that a successful MMO that captures the 1999 EQ feeling of wonderment/newness no longer possible? Or will it take another big jump in technology? Or do you have to be in your teens or 20s to feel that? I don’t pretend to know the answer, I’m just curious what y’all think.

I think you ideally should be in your teens and kids are probably having similar feelings about some other genre or medium today. The entire world is connected by smartphone these days so the novelty of a persistent online DnD game isn’t really the same as it was back then. Remember when EQ came out most were on dial-up you weren’t even on the internet 24/7

I also think widespread VR adoption could bring the next wave on.

I don’t think the next phenomenon will have anything to do with out-poopsocking some loser in a trailer park for a shiny pixel sword
