Despite a limited palate, the variety of textures in EQ had a lot of character. There are a ton of places in M&M that I have yet to visit, but my experience thus far leaves me wanting for a lot more variety and mood. Sitting at a campfire staring in to a literal black void for hours on end while mobs are deposited every 45 seconds is gay as fuck. At least give me something cool to look at while we grind.
A big part of why some of the zones/dungeons were so popular in EQ had a lot to do with their feel and, of course, great loot.
Yes I agree. EQ was very diverse and colorful. Hopefully they can do more like that. You see it in some places but not on character armor yet. Except the green beetle armor lol
this is just a modern game issue.
Everything has to be "real" and "highly detailed" or "high resolution textures"
In EQ, due to the restrictions - the textures had to "be" what it was, but /also/ representative... this is the low-fi appeal, because your brain, like reading, fills in and uses imagination to create the world from word or from filling in the fidelity of the lower graphics.
I posted the pre-alpha NH shot vs the beta/ea visuals - there is a big change... I even mentioned in this thread that I like the OG visuals because they are more representative of the texture than detailed, you can see "Stone wall" - "Brick wall" - "Desert sand" etc. generalized then as you get closer or whatever then yeah there are some details, and its nice - but you get the generalization...it allows Mobs to stand out and be seen as "Basic sand ground with green bug"
But even at that...it is all DESTROYED by the horrid lighting system.
Character models need help...you cant /see/ anything on any characters 1) because of lighting and 2 because of too much brown.
Even your own character is barely lit, you cannot see your own stuff that you work hard for... dorfs and others half their model is a beard or big halfling afro or whatever... DE, WE and Human are really the only decent ones...the others ehhh...
There are choices, there are art choices and then there needs to be a break from their hubris. the world needs to be lit, it needs to be seen, it needs to be able to be visualized by EVERYONE ... can there be exceptions? sure, but rare... it should be a rare thing to delve into complete darkness, not 95% of the game being groping around in bleak black murk.
