I bet if they made the comics downloadable for $0.99 day-and-date on a widely used media interface like iTunes they would make a ton of cash. I think many people would read them if they didnt need to worry about the physical space for em, and lets face it a comic is nearly perfect for a tablet device.

Within a year what are now 20k circulations could be 1M+ and people might actually *gasp* start talking about comics outside of genre circles.

Paper comics are dead, but comics in other digital forms are doing great ($500 million revenue movies, cartoons and hit video games). Maybe its time for the companies to embrace digital comics, instead of doing it half-assed. Back in the day, a comic would regularly do millions of sales in month, versus a hit comic today barely breaking 100k a month. Paper comics have gone the way of the do-do, Marvel and DC just haven"t realized it.

That is basically, what I and TONS of other creators are saying. Deaf ears though.

Actually working on a comic with a guy I know at Dark Horse atm. We"ve been trying to figure out if we"re going to just go traditional release or if we"re going to do digital, and we"re pretty much convinced that we"re going to do basically what Qhue said, though we"re trying to figure out the best distribution vehicle...

The problem with the DC mobile app or the Marvel mobile app is that you have to already know enough to download the app and that already hamstrings the "stumble across" marketing opportunity. Get in bed with Apple and get them to have a seperate "Comics" tab on itunes and watch your market saturation soar. But you cannot CANNOT play little timeshifting games with the price to appease the direct market retailers.

In my very own and entirely unscientific experience I"ve noted that if I have a couple comics sitting on the coffee table that people who wander into my home tend to pick them up and read them. One friend even makes a point now when coming over to ask "do I have anymore issues..." because just casual browsing through an issue once while I was making dinner got him hooked.

Comic book movies sell. People LIKE COMIC BOOKS, they just hate the damn paper books themselves, the price of them and most importantly the oh-so-beloved Local Comic Shop. Your average american consumer takes one step into your average LCS and does a heel-spin-turn back out the door.

Yes Virginia there ARE really nice mainstream-looking clean and well marketed local comic shops that are open and welcoming to non geeks. But the majority of them are still dank musty basement-looking dwellings full of objects and troglodytes that scare people away. I actually feel significantly less shame walking into a porn shop than I do the local comic shop... and that is a freaking travesty. The LCS owner caters to their uber customers from whom they reliably get a fixed income each month but at the price of completely marginalizing their own industry.

Digital. If you have the go ahead for DH, well, that changes things a bit.

But generally, I tell ANYONE even considering creator owned. really, really consider publishing on the web. one of two ways. Each has their own +/-.

Either, full on typical publication, via comixology, or the like.

Or the webcomic route. publish it for free. Rely on sub, donations, secondary market that your primary free comic brings in. (Penny arcade, pvp, drowtales are good examples of this. using different methods.) The main issue. and frankly the only reason I dont have a webcomic already. Is the turnaround for this is very very long. I generally tell people have 30-50 pages of comic ready to go before starting to publish, and then you need to assume 3-5 months minimum before you have high enough readership to turn it into an income. That is obviously a huge investment of time and money, before you can turn a profit. but if you do it well, its a potentially amazing long term investment.

Getting butt raped by diamond, production costs, and distribution kills potential profit for creator owned. You get limited runs, and shit distribution.
Its not like they advertise for you. The only way to make a profit that way is if you are an ex Marvel/DC superstar. Name recognition is half of this business.

Indeed. comics need to be an impulse purchase. They used to be on newstands. In the supermarket next to the candy bars, for parents to buy their kids to read while waiting in line.

Comixology isn"t verygood even. 1. the product needs to be stored local, and accessible outside of the app ideally.
They REALLY need to look at STEAM, more then itunes.
Sales, sales, sales. Steam daily deals would be a godsend for comics.
I should load up comixology/itunes and get a note showing 5 different 2 month old releases of comics at 25c.

And advertising.
The complete lack of comic advertising is another of the major, wtf is wrong with the execs in comics. When is the last time you"ve seen an add for comics, that was not in another comic?

Yeah, better exposure + sales/TPB = success for digital comics IMO. Otherwise it won"t grow beyond the number of people using the apps now and won"t get people who pirate to stop.

If I could subscribe to say, the X-Men, Avengers, Green Lantern, Spider-Man or something like that, for like $1.50 off each cover price, and got a push alert on my iPad when a collected arc is ready.... they"d have my money. It wouldn"t be day and date with a new issue to potentially appease the stores, who already have to discount TPBs heavilly anyways to compete with Amazon and whatnot.

As it is I"m already downloading half the paper comics I buy just so I have them on my iPad too. At some point I"ll just say fuck it why am I buying the paper but we still have real comic shops in Vegas (MaximuM Comics) so I"ve enjoyed the experience of new comic Wednesdays over the last couple months since I started "buying" again (since the market is so shitty compared to the 90s I"m not going to call it collecting).

It"s not a perfect idea, but it would be a good first step.

Need the same service across devices too. I"d consider paying for Marvels Digital subscription stuff for a month or two and enjoy it"s limited offering ... on my iPad ... but I"m only allowed to purchase titles a la cart.

Batwing #1 featuring the batman of Africa....

Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 featuring Jason Todd leading a team of anti-heroes including Arsenal (with both arms) and Stafire.

How the $%#@ is Starfire an "anti hero" ??

I see that"s filled in a lot more since that link was posted... I wonder what Stormwatch will be, loved that title even though I stopped reading comics 30 or so issues in (the whole issue 25 coming out a year+ in advance was kinda spiffy).

Grifter, Voodoo nice to see, not sure what other stuff that"s there is former Wildstorm if any.

Having never been into DC all that much, I"d give many of these titles a shot after seeing just their covers.

I expect justice league dark to be good. So odd, someone has to have a great story to tell to have gotten the go ahead.

Batwoman has a fantastic art team

JLI!!!!

Love Franci"s art, so Flash might be good.

Hawk and Dove with liefield. ffs. how does this clown get jobs?

Frankenstien, stormwatch, and grifter has such good pedigree.
All star western has a great team.
Suicide squad sounds interesting.

I would recommend checking out some of the ex-wildstorm stuff.

I"m not working on any of these as of yet. And haven"t heard any whispers.
Its a great time to check out some new things that you might not have considered in the past.

Dave McCaig just said he was coloring Supergirl. hes a beast.

lol, hadn"t read Herc yet because I was behind, that"s hilarious though. Really happy with his title so far.

Another I"m liking is Moon Knight.

Kinda bleh on Fear Itself too. Summer long crossover that feels way too slow and way to fast in parts. I am not sure why im bothering with some of these tie in books because almost all of them have been horrible.

I guess this week is the last issue of Uncanny X-Men, to be inevitably rebooted probably once Schism (X-books event, being billed as the mutant version of Civil War) concludes.

Enjoying seeing more of the Age of Apocalypse world in X-Force, premise for being there and how quickly that went to shit aside.
