Moving from Hawaii

After a decade-long vacation, my wife, kids and I are leaving Hawaii.

Thought process:

My daughter is 14 and my son is 8. Here's only ever known life in Hawaii. Hawaii is an amazing place to live, but it isn't a great place for a developing family unless you're already sitting on millions and don't have anything to worry about.

But back in the real world, we're a starter family. We don't have millions, let alone million... Shit, not even close to a hundred grand. As a result, when the kids are ready to move out, they won't be able to. It's an impossibility to rent any size place to live for less than $1k. Our 2-bedroom was a little over $3k. And it only goes up.

So we thought about it a lot and decided to move back to the mainland. That's what Hawaii calls the continental US. We did a lot of research, and decided on San Antonio, Texas. I flew out a few weeks ago to find an apartment to move to until we're ready to buy a new house.

We've spent the last 2-3 months doing all the steps in order to leave without any problems. Hawaii is currently 5-hours behind Texas. Anyway, we payed U-haul around $4k for a container that they will ship to Texas. It's not as big as a POD, but we packed the shit out of it.

9ft long, 6.5ft wide and 7ft tall.
Here's what our packed container looks like.

Sorry, can't reduce the size on my phone.

Anyway, we also shipped our vehicles. They were done though Matson, and the price was only $1,020 per vehicle, where as it's closer to $1,400 just to ship from Cali or Seattle to Hawaii.

Anyway, I found an awesome 3-bedroom apartment, and the rent is only $1600/month. A huge savings over Hawaii.

We've spent a while emptying out the house, sitting on the floors and what not.
I didn't get a chance to take pictures as we were leaving this morning, because we were running out of time. But here's what it looked like a week or two ago, while removing everything.

So anyway, we shipped our cars out a few weeks ago, and were flying out today. Going to stop by Matson as soon as we arrive and start our 3-day drive to Texas.

This morning, we received notification that my wife's suv is available, but Matson hasn't unloaded my minivan from the ship yet and unfortunately, the dock has taken today off for Juneteenth, and won't be back to work until Monday.

Well shit...

So this morning, we had to change a lot of shit. My wife has 1la night of free hotel that we're using tonight, but decided to rent an air b&b for a few days after that. We also rented a vehicle to use for a few days while we wait for Matson to do their job again.

As I type all this, I'm on the plane flying to Long Beach. Here's a video of maybe or last time leaving Hawaii.

Edit: As a frame of reference, this is what our place looked like before emptying it out.

I'm sure you are already aware but San Antonio is heavily divided. I lived in a suburb adjacent to San Antionio. Very well off, very non minority, non exstent crime. Have the "talk" with your kids about being careful they don't get isolated suddenly with no options. Also there are things you can't and can say in public, especially if they go to public school.

Having said the shop of the company where I worked had a number of Mexican heritage. They really and I mean really didn't like the newcomers that were illegal.

Everyone in family has been to Hawaii, but me. I think you will find most people are friendly and will bend over backwards to explain how stuff works whick likely is not like things work in Hawaii. Just ask, and tell them you are new to TX. They will likely know before you say anything.

I am not an apartment guy. However the company I was working for picked up the tab for me for 6 months. Not as bad as I thought. Very new, very quiet, and my balcony overlooked a river so afternoons I spent on the outside balcony watching deer. A large percentage of people were officers in the Air Force. SA area has a number of AF bases and joint forces bases.

HEB is your friend. The company I worked for was originally headquarted in CA and they bought a company in San Antonio and merged it into their company in Waco that also had moved from CA. Kind of a trend. When I first moved there it was raining so I stopped at a self car wash to wash off my truck and am not that particular. Guy next to me washing his car in a self wash deal had a new Ferarri with CA tags. Said he had just moved and had driven his car. Odd things. He asked me where something was at.

If you order a soft drink and say Dr. Pepper the server will ask if you want dr. Pepper or a Coke. Dr. Pepper kinda is substituted for Coke or Soda at times. Just like if you say Coke, they will ask if you want Coke or Pepsi. King of the Hill show is over the top, but the theme is still there in some ways.

I'm looking forward to seeing the crazy high school football game rivalries. Even if I don't care about sports.

Visited Hawaii, same island that traffic was nuts. Visited Texas, they have no knowledge of what an interstate merge lane is so hit it and hope for the best. Also TX is LARGE. That's about all I got other than go see the Alamo.

When I lived in Austin people would talk about riding the river in New Braunfels (BYOB drinking and floating) and the Schlitterbahn waterpark (family oriented). No clue how good or bad the waterpark is these days (they were bought by Six Flags), but it could be something to improve the kid's moods, if they are missing Hawaii. It's halfway between San Antonio and Austin:

Too late now, but for as expensive as that moving container was just from your photo I see way too much stuff that would have been better to sell/ditch and rebuy locally.

I think so long in insane state has skewed things, I know housing is up everywhere, but I still recoil at the thought of 1600 for an apartment, ya it's been 15 years but our equivalent sized one in a nice area in $$$ colorado was 1200 back in the day, and we rented a whole as house with a full basement for 1400, my 4 bedroom house was like 1900 mortgage, and our overpaid Oklahoma property was 400k for 5 acres /house/shop way pricier at 2700.

Moving sucks but at least you didnt have too much stuff to worry about, hopefully you have real jobs lined up and not still doing the uber shit.

San Antonio is a fast growing city in Texas with a lot of opportunities, but it’s pretty heavily Hispanic. If your kids are any shade darker than pasty, be prepared for everyone to think they’re Hispanic and how to handle that.

Just in time to float the Guadalupe and go to Schlitterbahn. Family should enjoy both. Go to Rockin R to rent intertubes, they have shuttles running all day long to bring you back to your car after a day on the river. I can't think of a better introduction to Texas.

Buy your groceries at HEB.

Take the wife out to Gruene for a date night and catch a show at Gruene Hall.

Welcome to Texas!

If someone says "bless your heart" to someone it's not a compliment at all. Don't be shocked to hear people say ma'am.

Bat viewing when they leave the caves close to dark. One in Bracken which is just up I-35 as you leave the city limits going north. Natural bridge caverns are just a little further out in the same area, which I think is in Comal county as well.

People give distances in how long it takes to drive there and not in miles.

Those are the costs today. Can't get around it. When I moved to Houston 11 years ago my apartment in River Oaks was $1,650 for a 2+2 and 1,200 square feet. That same apartment today is almost $3,000. Regardless, everything is cheaper and more accessible in Texas than in Hawaii.

Sorry you're moving in June. Its going to be fucking HOT my dude. Uncomfortable hot.

Lots of us Texans here so feel free to ask anything as time goes on.

Ya, I know it's gotten stupid. But even by your numbers I'm just saying mini farm vs just an apartment for those prices. So I guess I was hinting more at a side conversation, how did he choose San Antonio, I didnt hear about any career stuff, so if he's just winging it getting back stateside, I just may have considered some other places because I think a lot of Texas is getting notorious for pretty bad housing prices anywhere good. If he is gig jobbing, then ya he needs to be in big cities. If by some miracle he actually was remote for example could set up in Rural Wyoming or something and have an $800 house rental.

I'm jealous he'll have access to HEB etc. Not sure he'd get the chance but a lot of the gun tubers are down that way, might bump into them.

Side note, it was mentioned a few years ago about maybe doing a texas meet, still totally need to do that, try and strongarm Springbok Springbok into coming down with me to North Texas or something. Have the most unbelievably based non PC conversations in public.

No doubt about it, rural space would save a ton. Guess I also assumed it was a work move to choose a big city. I’d prefer to not be here, but this is where the work and money is.

If you don't want to pay the ridiculous private school prices, you almost need to be selective on that basis alone. In Houston, think of places like Woodlands or Cinco Ranch; in DFW, places like Grapevine or Rockwall; in Austin, pretty much anything near Lake Travis. (I know very little about San Antonio)

Texas has good public schools that poorer states have a difficult time competing with. So would then need to look at paying for private.

The worst part about Texas is the property tax and you can't get away from it by moving into the rural areas. Without kids though, I would certainly eye Oklahoma or Arkansas over Texas (mainly due to property tax and AR has some great scenery, while neither have much snow, where the salt is going to fuck my vehicles).
