Life's a Dream
After a decade-long vacation, my wife, kids and I are leaving Hawaii.
Thought process:
My daughter is 14 and my son is 8. Here's only ever known life in Hawaii. Hawaii is an amazing place to live, but it isn't a great place for a developing family unless you're already sitting on millions and don't have anything to worry about.
But back in the real world, we're a starter family. We don't have millions, let alone million... Shit, not even close to a hundred grand. As a result, when the kids are ready to move out, they won't be able to. It's an impossibility to rent any size place to live for less than $1k. Our 2-bedroom was a little over $3k. And it only goes up.
So we thought about it a lot and decided to move back to the mainland. That's what Hawaii calls the continental US. We did a lot of research, and decided on San Antonio, Texas. I flew out a few weeks ago to find an apartment to move to until we're ready to buy a new house.
We've spent the last 2-3 months doing all the steps in order to leave without any problems. Hawaii is currently 5-hours behind Texas. Anyway, we payed U-haul around $4k for a container that they will ship to Texas. It's not as big as a POD, but we packed the shit out of it.
9ft long, 6.5ft wide and 7ft tall.
Here's what our packed container looks like.
Sorry, can't reduce the size on my phone.
Anyway, we also shipped our vehicles. They were done though Matson, and the price was only $1,020 per vehicle, where as it's closer to $1,400 just to ship from Cali or Seattle to Hawaii.
Anyway, I found an awesome 3-bedroom apartment, and the rent is only $1600/month. A huge savings over Hawaii.
We've spent a while emptying out the house, sitting on the floors and what not.
I didn't get a chance to take pictures as we were leaving this morning, because we were running out of time. But here's what it looked like a week or two ago, while removing everything.
So anyway, we shipped our cars out a few weeks ago, and were flying out today. Going to stop by Matson as soon as we arrive and start our 3-day drive to Texas.
This morning, we received notification that my wife's suv is available, but Matson hasn't unloaded my minivan from the ship yet and unfortunately, the dock has taken today off for Juneteenth, and won't be back to work until Monday.
Well shit...
So this morning, we had to change a lot of shit. My wife has 1la night of free hotel that we're using tonight, but decided to rent an air b&b for a few days after that. We also rented a vehicle to use for a few days while we wait for Matson to do their job again.
As I type all this, I'm on the plane flying to Long Beach. Here's a video of maybe or last time leaving Hawaii.
Edit: As a frame of reference, this is what our place looked like before emptying it out.
