I don't think I'm very optimistic, but maybe in the right hands you could make it work. One thing I always liked about the movies that Coscarelli touched on, but wasn't really able to do with budget constraints, was the slow crawling apocalyptic aspect of the tall man's invasion creeping over the small towns. Maybe you have new characters, and explore that more, have Reggie come back out of nowhere to guide them. They're still one of my favorite movie series, and I'd be excited if somebody could actually do it justice.
Who am I kidding, Reggie will probably be a black man, and Mike will be replaced by a lesbian Mexican or something.
