NHL 2013 - 2014 Season Thread

Love my job. I worked a charity golf tournament for Ryan Getzlaf. Most of the Ducks were there. It was cool to see Selanne before his final season.

Oilers signed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to a 7 year contract, 6 million per year. So he, Hall and Eberle are now all tied up until the 2019-20 season more or less. RNH for one more year, Eberle for one less. All at 6m a year. So long as he can stay healthy going forward, I think it's going to be a good signing. And actually, I think all 3 signings together are awesome. The organization has basically established a team cap on salaries at around 6m/year, no one will make more than those 3. Justin Schultz will probably get a similar deal after this year, assuming he puts up 40+ points and settles his shit down in his own end. Same with Yakupov if he puts in 30+ goals this year. Our core of 5 best players will be locked up long term, and the rest of the team can be built around them. So long as the salary cap keeps going up, in 2-3 years all of those contracts will look so fucking cheap.

Looking forward to the regular season so much!

I asked a couple threads back and didn't see anyone respond, but any interest in getting a RR yahoo fantasy league going for the year?

Lightning need to stop winning and getting my hopes up. I know it's only preseason, but at least it's real hockey unlike preseason football.

Apparently Henrik has suggested that if they don't get a new contract done before the season starts he'll break off negotiations.

Sooo hypothetical here: SayI go to New York and poison/injure most of their line up to make sure they are out of playoff contention as early as possible, so that they'll try trading him and the Penguins might get him....how evil would that make me?

For some reason I thought that Fleury was signed to a way longer contract than he is. They might actually be able to get rid of him if they found someone else to replace him with. I thought they were going to be stuck with him for another 4-5 years.

Crosby is getting 12 million a year, the cap hit is due to circumvention. Anyone expecting Kessel to get less under the new CBA is retarded, he would have commanded more as a UFA and gotten it.

Meh, always been a Pens fan. Fantasizing about getting The King to replace The Flower has fuckall to do with the horrible Steelers.

How's MAF looking this year?
He'll look good/great in the regular season. Top 3 in wins, good GAA/Sv pct.

Then the playoffs will start and he'll look like a lower tier high school goalie.

Yeah, you're right about Crosby's cap hit. But let's compare instead to Malkin, Perry, Staal, Getzlaf, or Nash. None of those circumvent the cap, and all of them are far superior players. I think you're crazy if you think that Kessel would have gotten more than that in the open market.

edit: whoops, Malkin's contract cap hit is only 8.7 until the end of this year, then 9.5

Impossible to say, pre-season means nothing. I hope he spent a lot of time with his goaltending coach over the summer.
