Isn't this ironic given we had pretty good Conf Finals this year (at least, good teams in them) but both would have been 1st round match ups in a 1-8 setup?

Exactly. Both those finals should've been 1sters.
Playoff first rounds have been amazing for a while now. But I start to lose interest towards the CFs. People are also tired of seeing the same matchup. Oh boy Kings and Oilers again!
Oh well maybe next year when they get record breaking non viewers again they'll wise up.

See I'm the opposite, I think we got really great CF by those being CF. By that point of the playoffs, those 4 teams seemed like they deserved to be where they were. Other than Carolina's weird problem once they're actually in the ECF. But I'm also the type who really likes building those division rivalries in the first couple rounds of the playoffs, too. Meeting some random team in Round 1 never as exciting as this year's battle v those shitheads we played recently, etc.
I'll grant Kings and Oilers have probably met up a time or two too many in a row, but that's an outlier, even with the current setup.

Im glad its over and I dont have to hear about it anymore, but the fact he took a lower % of cap for his second contract then his first is further proof he needed to go. Maybe he will do amazing in Vegas, maybe facing Edmonton in the second round will break him in half but I no longer have to care.

Ekblad's should be fine 6.1 is very good value. Marchand you would expect to get 2 years out of it, I guess they will try to send him to Robidas island after that and make him a scout or something.

They only have Bob for another 2 years. 3 if they're lucky before he falls off a cliff. Even if everything else was good finding a Bob replacement would really hurt future chances. So you might as well keep going all in right now.
It doesn't really matter if it all goes to shit in 2 years because they've already won back to back. It goes to shit for most teams and many of them never make it to the Finals.
Dankest timeline: The year is 2032. The Panthers failed to make the conference finals several years in a row after Bobrovsky retired. However, they finally get back and reach the top of the mountain, beating the Edmonton Oilers for the third time in the Stanley Cup finals.
