I found that if I "reset" (i.e. respawned) my Astrolabe forest realms then ran around and did all the puzzles, and farmed mats I get a decent rate of essence. Also make sure you have that essence charm, seems to considerably up the drop rate (especially when farming mats). Spam collect as you're running from place to place and get occasional essences from fiber.
